Duties and Responsibilities:

This position is limited to 09/24/2011 with extension contingent on funding.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Assist with the operation of Gardiner Crop Science ("Agronomy") farm, including data collection. Perform research work under occasional review.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct farm tasks such as soil preparation, planting, weed and pest control, and harvesting.
Operate equipment including tractors, trucks, mowers, bedmaker, transplanter, sprayer, cultivator, and a variety of tractor-mounted implements.
Supervise student workers and harvest crews, and provide support for classes using the farm.
Manage Agronomy Farm Produce, ensuring that produce donated to the RI Food Bank or sold on campus is properly handled, packed, stored, and tracked.
Assist PIs with plot establishment and maintenance and with data collection.
Assist Research Associate with maintenance of farm equipment and facilities.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform other duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printers; word processing, database and spreadsheet software; relevant farm implements. Must have or be able to obtain a RI Pesticide Applicator's License. Must have a valid RI Driver's license.

Required Qualifications:

REQUIRED:
1) Bachelor's degree in an agriculture-related field;
2) Minimum of two years of experience in farming and in managing a crew;
3) Experience with operating tractors and farm implements;
4) Experience using word processing, database and spreadsheet software;
5) Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
6) Excellent interpersonal skills;
7) Strong organizational skills;
8) Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
9) Valid driver's license.
10) Must have or be able to obtain a RI Pesticide Applicator's License.

PREFERRED:
1) Skill in managing a food-related business, particularly food handling and account management;
2) Mechanical aptitude and experience with equipment maintenance;
30 Experience in vegetable production.

Environmental Conditions:

The position involves strenuous outdoor work in all seasons and weather conditions. Must be able to lift 50 lbs, stand for long periods, bend and squat, and walk on uneven ground. Must be able to safely operate heavy equipment.
