Main purpose of the job:
Working collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders, to create, develop and lead aninternationally excellent independent research programme that enhances the Institute’s research and capabilities.

Internal: All levels of staff within the Institute

External: Staff on the Norwich Research Park,national and international scientific collaborators, funding bodies, Governmentand other stakeholders

Main activities and responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage an internationally recognised, high profile, innovative research programme
  • Make significant contributions to strategic thinking and planning of research
  • Lead and manage a research team, taking responsibility for its outputs and impact. This will include selecting, supervising, mentoring and training postdoctoral researchers, students and visitors, supporting effective career development, maintaining high levels of performance in the team, including ensuring that team members meet Institute standards (JIC’s Personal Attributes) on Communication, Working Together, Excellence, Respect, Taking Responsibility and Leadership
  • Disseminate research findings through the publication of peer-reviewed research papers, and consolidate the Institute’s international scientific reputation through participation in national and internal conferences and provision of expert commentary in a variety of media
  • Submit grant proposals across a broad range of potential funders, securing substantial research fundingto support the research programme
  • Ensure that research and record keeping is carried out in accordance with best practice,Institute Policies and Procedures and legal requirements
  • Ensure that the research team complies with health and safetypolicy and guidance documents, and with quality assurance and data management procedures.
  • Manage the research team’s budgetsin accordance with grant conditions and requirements and good financial practice, making cost-effective use of resources and minimising waste
  • Contribute to the effective leadership and management of the Institute through additional Institute responsibilities, including supporting scientific training and serving on institute committees, as and when required
  • Enhance the wider social and economic impact of the Institute’s research through influencing and developing partnerships and commercial opportunities with government, industry and other external parties
  • Commit to Public Engagement/Science Communication activities that raise the Institute’s profile and public awareness of science.
  • Any other duties that may be required which are commensurate with the role of Project Leader.

Education and qualifications / PhD or equivalent, plus substantial postdoctoral research experience in an area of science or mathematics of relevance to the research proposal.
Specialist knowledge and skills / Deep and broad understanding of the scientific background of the proposed research programme.
Significant track record of research achievement, supported by a strong first/corresponding author publication record in peer reviewed journals.
Effective report writing skills.
Effective presentation skills. / Management and Leadership skills and experience.
Evidence of measures of esteem such as international invited plenaries, editorial appointments, professional society activity, etc. / Ability to lead and participate in interdisciplinary research.
Relevant experience / Ability to motivate, manage and mentor members of the team, including objective setting and regular informal and formal reviews of progress
Demonstrated commitment to employing best practice in science and scientific management, pursuing excellence at all times.
Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise to ensure scientific ideas translate into delivery of research outcomes. / Research project leadership and management experience.
Evidence of winning external support for the maintenance of a successful research team.
A record of leadership in collaborative research projects. / Experienced as a senior manager.
Attracted external funding from a range of sources.
Previous experience of establishing a research team.
Experience in line management, training, coaching or mentoring.
Proven track record in internationally competitive scientific research.
