TASA Prize & Award Policy
Jean Martin Award (awarded in odd years; 2015, 2017, 2019)
For this Award the successful recipient will receive the following:
- Five Hundred dollars ($500.00) from the Jean Martin Memorial Fund;
- A TASA ‘JMA’ trophy;
- A TASA ‘JMA’ certificate;
- Complementary registration to attend TASA Annual Conference and dinner, where the award will be presented;
- Invitation to be part of the next judging panel for the JMA;
- Invitation to contribute a synopsis of the thesis to be published in Nexus;
- A listing on TASAweb’s ‘Recipients of the Jean Martin Award’.
Stephen Crook Memorial Prize (awarded in even years; 2014, 2016, 2018)
For this Prize the successful recipient will receive the following:
- Five Hundred dollars ($500.00) from the Stephen Crook Memorial Prize Fund;
- A TASA ‘SCMP’ trophy.In the case of two or more authors, one trophy will be awarded listing all authors;
- A TASA ‘SCMP’ certificate. In the case of two or more authors, each prize recipient will receive an individual certificate;
- Complementary registration for TASA Annual Conference and dinner, where the award will be presented. In the case of two or more authors, one author will receive the complementary registration and dinner to receive the Prize;
- An invitation to discuss their book at a ‘Meet the Author’ session and have the opportunity to promote the book at a free publisher’s stand during TASA Conference at which the Prize is awarded;
- Invitation to be part of the next judging panel for the SCMP;
- An Invitation to submit a short paper on the book for Nexus;
- Extensive publicity through TASA membership and the wider social science community;
- A listing on TASAweb’s ‘Recipients of the Stephen Crook Memorial Prize’.
Raewyn Connell Prize (awarded in even years; 2014, 2016, 2018)
Please note: Raewyn Connell is to be invited to sit on the panel of each RCP round.
For this Prize the successful recipient will receive the following:
- Five Hundred dollars ($500.00) from the Raewyn Connell Prize Fund;
- A TASA ‘RCP’ trophy.In the case of two or more authors, one trophy will be awarded listing all authors;
- A TASA ‘RCP’ certificate. In the case of two or more authors, each prize recipient will receive an individual certificate;
- A complementary registration for the TASA Annual Conference and dinner, where the award will be presented. In the case of two or more authors, one author will receive the complementary registration and dinner to receive the Prize;
- An invitation to discuss their book at a ‘Meet the Author’ session and have the opportunity to promote the book at a free publisher’s stand during TASA Conference at which the Prize is awarded;
- Invitation to be part of the next judging panel for the RCP;
- An Invitation to submit a short paper on the book for Nexus;
- Extensive publicity through TASA membership and the wider social science community;
- A listing on the TASAweb ‘Recipients of the Raewyn Connell Prize’.
Best Paper in Journal of Sociology(awarded in even years; 2014, 2016, 2018)
For this Award the successful recipient will receive the following:
- A complementary registration for the TASA Annual Conference and dinner, where the award will be presented. In the case of two or more authors, one author will receive the complementary registration and dinner to accept the Prize;
- A TASA ‘Best Paper in JoS’certificate. In the case of two or more authors, each prize recipient will receive an individual certificate;
- A listing on TASAweb’s ‘Recipients of the JoS Best Paper Prize’.
Outstanding Service to TASA Award (awarded at TASA Executive discretion)
For this Award the recipient will receive the following:
- A complementary registration for the TASA Annual Conference and dinner, where the award will be presented;
- A formal letter of appreciation written by the current TASA president;
- A TASA ‘Outstanding Service to TASA Award’ certificate;
- A listing on TASAweb’sOutstanding Service to TASA Roll.
TASA Award for Distinguished Service to Australian Sociology (TASA Executive discretion)
For this Award the recipient will receive the following:
- A complementary registration for the TASA Annual Conference and dinner, where the award will be presented;
- An engraved plaque;
- A TASA ‘Award for Distinguished Service to Australian Sociology’ certificate;
- An invitation to write an opinion piece about some aspect of their work for publication in Nexus, Journal of Sociology or Health Sociology Review, or any other journal TASA may sponsor at the time of the Award;
- A listing on the TASAweb ‘Recipients of the Award for Distinguished Service to Australian Sociology’.
The JMA, SCMP, RCP, JoS BP, OST & DSAS are all presented at TASA conference dinner.
Judging panel members
Members of the judging panel for the JMA, SCMP and the RCP will receive the following:
- Complimentary registration for TASA Conference and dinner, where the award will be presented. Please note that this benefit is not transferable. TASA Executive Members are not eligible to receive free conference registration or dinner as being a panel member is considered part of the responsibilities of their position on the Executive.
TASA Postgraduate Conference Scholarship Fund (can be awarded every year up to 5 recipients, which includes the Jerzy Scholarship)
The recipient of this scholarship will receive:
- A complementary registration for TASA Annual Conference, where the award ceremony will be held;
- Registration for the pre-conference TASA Annual Postgraduate Workshop;
- A TASA ‘Postgraduate Conference Scholarship’ certificate;
- A listing on the TASAweb ‘Recipients of TASA Postgraduate Conference Scholarship Fund’.
TASA Vice-President is the convenor of the PCSF. TASA Postgraduate Executive Member is the panel member. The PCSF scholarship is awarded at TASA conference postgraduate workshop, by TASA President (or nominee), during the postgraduate afternoon tea with TASA executive.
TASA Conference Scholarship for Sociologists Outside Academe (can be awarded every year up to 3 recipients per year)
The recipient of this scholarship will receive:
- A complementary registration for the TASA Annual Conference, where the award ceremony will be held;
- A TASA Conference Scholarship for Sociologists Outside Academe certificate;
- A listing on the TASAweb ‘Recipients of TASA Conference Scholarship for Sociologists Outside Academe’.
TASA Vice-President is the convenor of the SOA. TASA Postgraduate Executive Member is the panel member.The SOA is awarded at TASA conference by TASA President (or nominee) at a time nominated by the President.
Eligibility Criteria
Those eligible for consideration of the SOA scholarship will meet the following criteria:
- Current or recent employment or self-employment in an area such as private industry, government organisation, non-government organisation, private contract work, or consultancy work.
- Applicants’ primary employment must be outside universities, academic research centres or joint industry-university centres
- Acceptance of a refereed conference paper where the applicant is the first-named author. Preference will be given to applicants whose paper is about their work outside academia, rather than papers based on work completed while studying or working within academia.
- Current financial TASA members
- Agree to submit a brief profile of their work/career to be published in Nexus, if awarded a scholarship.
Please note:
As all individuals involved in the award and receipt of the foresaid prizes must be members of TASA to be eligible to take part in any capacity, it is expected that, as members of TASA, they would be present at the annual TASA conference. No further complimentary registration or other benefits will be made available. However, in the event of extreme hardship, the TASA Executive is willing to consider written applications only, from those who are in need of additional funding, in order to be present and to receive their award.
