Brucella abortus was first isolated from chinese water deer among wild animal. Also we gained 73 Brucella canis from Veterinary Service Laboratory in Gyeongbuk province.

A total of 1,763 sera obtained from cattle (213), pig (970), deer (420) and goat (160) were examined for brucellosis surveillance in Korea.

2. Production and distribution of diagnostic reagents

Type of reagent / Amount supplied nationally
(including for own use) / Amount supplied to other countries
RBT antigen (B. abortus) / 1,000 dose
RBT antigen (B. canis M-strain) / 1,000 dose
SAT antigen (B. abortus) / 69,700 dose
CFA (B. abortus) / 1,000 dose

Part II: Activities specifically related to the mandate
of OIE Reference Laboratories

3. International harmonisation and standardisation of methods for diagnostic testing or the production and testing of vaccines

We are participated to the ring trial, among OIE reference labolatories, to evaluate of FPA kit from Argentina.

Diagnostic antigens produced in our laboratory were compared with antigens gained from other reference laboratory and international reference standards.

4. Preparation and supply of international reference standards for diagnostic tests or vaccines

We provided 480 PCR (B. abortus) test kit to Yabian University, China.

5. Research and development of new procedures for diagnosis and control

We are collaborating with Mrs J A Stack`s reference laboratory (VLA, UK) for development of differential diagnosis method using specific antigens for Brucellosis. The title is 『Differential diagnosis of bovine brucellosis using specific antigens..

For canine brucellosis DNA vaccine, our laboratory is searching for new antigen from Brucella canis cell envelope. Now we found 12 candidate antigens.

Studies on development of a rapid genetic differential diagnostic method and molecular epidemiological analysis for Brucella isolates.

Also we are collaborating with universities in Korea for below topics 『Studies on pathogenesis of bovine brucellosis throughunderstanding of Brucella abortus-host cell interaction.』 and 『Surveillance of Brucellosis in Wild animals and Rodents.

6. Collection, analysis and dissemination of epizootiological data relevant to international disease control

None

7. Provision of consultant expertise to OIE or to OIE Members

We consulted with National Institute of Animal Health, Thailand and Institute of Veterinary Medicine, Mongol for diagnostic methods and eradication program of brucellosis. We are planning to MOU for mutual cooperation in 2011.

8. Provision of scientific and technical training to personnel from other OIE Members

We provided technical training to veterinary officers (20 persons) from Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.

9. Provision of diagnostic testing facilities to other OIE Members

None

10. Organisation of international scientific meetings on behalf of OIE or other international bodies

None

11. Participation in international scientific collaborative studies

For the joint research project on development of differential diagnosis for bovine brucellosis between our lab (NVRQS) and VLA (UK), one of researchers dispatched to VLA for 2 months.

12. Publication and dissemination of information relevant to the work of OIE (including list of scientific publications, internet publishing activities, presentations at international conferences)
