LISSA MEETING MINUTES – FEBRUARY 19, 2008

SPRING 2008 MEETING DATES:

March 4th, April 1st, and April 29th. All meetings will take place in the SCILS Student Lounge and begin at 5:30PM.

Spring 2008 Activities:

Speakers:

·  Question & Answer Session with Young Adult Authors

February 21st, 7-9:30PM, SCILS Faculty Lounge

·  New Jersey YA Authors

·  There will be snacks!!!

·  Super exciting, so come!

·  PhD candidate Jill Ratzan will give a talk on the children’s book,

Where the Wild Things Are. Friday, March 7, 7-8:30PM, SCILS Faculty Lounge

·  First there will be reading it aloud, and talking about what you notice about it as a book

·  Then there will be lots of generalized questions about picture books, and what people think about them as a form of children’s books and an art form

·  Afterwards there will be socializing (aka dinner and/or drinks)

·  Art Librarians Conference – Saturday, April 26th, Time TBA, Graduate Student Lounge (behind Au Bon Pain)

·  This will be happening in some form - we just do not know exactly what yet. May be Forum rather than a conference

·  Keep the date open!

Trips:

·  Washington D.C. LOC tour – Postponed until Fall 2008

·  This will be open to past MLIS students as well, so people who have missed out in the past two years could go!

·  We really want a big turn out for this trip, so keep it in mind for the fall.

·  Baker & Taylor Tour – Wednesday March 26th - from 9am to 11am

·  Information about locations has been / and will be emailed

·  Very interesting tour - everyone who can make it should go

·  It will be help you see the background of collection preparation

·  And they sometimes have a jobs for librarians J

·  Tour of the New Jersey State Library – TBA (what’s a good day?)

·  Friday’s are good day’s for most people

·  Also try to get a tour of the State Library for the Blind

Social Events:

·  Following Jill Ratzan’s talk on March 7th students will be going out to socialize in New Brunswick.

·  End-of-the-Year Party

Friday, April 25th 6-9PM at the Log Cabin in the Rutgers Gardens on Cook Campus

·  Marie Radford’s Band WILL be playing

Announcements:

·  The LIS Department is interviewing candidates for a digital library/information technology professorship. The department has stated that student input will be taken very seriously in deciding who to appoint. The second talk and student meeting with a candidate will be this Friday, February 15th in the SCILS Faculty Lounge (lecture is noon to 1:30PM; student meeting opportunity is 4:45-5:15PM). Students are strongly encouraged to attend one or both of these events.

·  Students who have been going to the presentations - have been emailing Nick Belkin with comments ()

·  It is great to have people here, it helps the candidates and the faculty to pick this new faculty member

·  If you get to go - please send any comments or ideas about the candidates to Nick Belkin.

·  Need to vote for a new GSA Rep.

·  Kristie Revicki was voted in as the new GSA rep

·  GSA meetings are on Sunday nights at 7:00pm

·  Form a Legislative/Advocacy Action Committee

·  To help keep with these issues of such importance to all library students and those people associated with libraries.

·  Close to home issue - what happens if the New Jersey Knowledge Initiative does not find the funding it needs

·  Philadelphia Art Museum Library Tour – Thank you Kim!!!

o  This was a great trip - and we would like to thank Kim as a group!

o  None of the committees have any information to report currently

·  The Museum of Moving Images

·  Also a trip to IEEE - from the Special Library Association (which is trying to restart with the help of Jana Varlejs)

·  LISSA Officers

·  Jana is trying to get together students to re-start the Special Library Association

·  Anyone interested in this, should contact Jana Varlejs ( )

·  Update from Mitch on SCILS online communicating system.

o  He went to talk to John Oliver - and he said it sounded great (all for it)

o  There has been no additional contact, but he is still working on it.

o  We would try to make an easy, and memorable web address for it, so people will easily be able to find it.

Any other announcements

·  Stew has been made aware that students in the program need more information and notification about changes in the program and classes. They are going to work on making this system more standardized.
