Lewis and Clark

Ms. Dale American HistoryDate Due: ______

Assigned Corps Member:______

In addition to Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, there were a number of other people that accompanied them on their expedition. Of course, there was the small military force that was supposed to protect them and their discoveries. However, there was another group of civilians, who had very specific jobs - such as interpreter, trapper, navigator or hunter and Capt. Lewis’s Newfoundland dog.

Your assignment is to research the corps member you have been assigned answer the questions below. Once you have answered the questions, you and your partner will write a poem, rap or song to an existing tune to share with the rest of the class that includes the all the answers to the questions1-8 below.

Please feel free to be creative. Your poem / rap should be about 1-3 minutes long and I recommend that you create a chorus that contains the most important information related to your corps member. Some of your verses may require longer lyrics to answer the question.

Be sure that every question is included during your presentation and that every group member participates.

  1. What was the background of this person, before they joined the expedition?
  1. What was their specific role during the expedition?
  1. What specific abilities and skills did they bring to the expedition?
  1. What were some interesting things that happened to this person on the trip?
  1. Did this person turn out to be valuable and well liked by the rest of the Corps? How do you know?
  1. Speculate (make an educated guess) about how the trip might be different if this person hadn't been there.
  1. How were they compensated for their experiences? How were others compensated for their experiences? How did they feel about that?
  1. Briefly describe the rest of their lives, and/or how they died.
