  • Sophomores – Applications are now available for HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar). Open to all 10th graders, HOBY motivates and develops future student leaders, preparing them for positions in their schools and communities. While attending this all-expense paid 3-day seminar, students are introduced to distinguished community leaders from various sectors of business, technology, education, government, arts & science. Pick up an application from your English teacher or Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration office. Deadline to apply is Nov. 14, 2017.

  • Students who would be interested in learning more about tobacco, e-cigarettes and hookah smoking and how it affects your health, there is a TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention and Education) program meeting every Tuesday lunch in room 1106. All are welcome, pizza provided.

  • Attention all: Mark your calendars. GUSD is holding its annual College and Career Fair on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Glendale Civic Auditorium located at 1401 N. Verdugo Rd., in Glendale (across from Glendale Community College). Admission and parking are free. College/University representatives and career professionals will be available to answer questions about college requirements and career paths. Glendale Community College will also offer a Financial Aid presentation from 6:00 to 700 p.m. Don’t miss out.
  • The Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project (APYLP), a non-profit organization, is inviting interested Asian and Pacific Islander American students to apply for the high school conference offering group workshops on leadership development, cultural identity, and awareness, the legislative process and public speaking skills as well as an opportunity to participate in mock legislative sessions and to hear from elected officials and prominent speakers from the statewide applicants to participate in the all-expenses-paid conference onMarch 22-25, 2018 in Sacramento. Coca-Cola Scholars Program – is an achievement based scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Voice of Democracy Speech Contest – is open to students in grades 9-12. 2017-18 Theme – “American History: Our Hope for the Future” Information and instructions for submission are available at Deadline-Oct. 31, 2017

John M. Belk Scholarship, Davidson College– Are you a graduating senior considering Davidson College? If so, look into the Belk scholarship. This award recognizes and rewards students of demonstrated intellectual, personal achievement and leadership. Davidson College selects eight Belk Scholars each year. This annually renewable award is equivalent to the college’s comprehensive fees (valued at over $63,000). Nomination materials are available at and deadline to apply is Nov. 10, 2017.

Maryknoll Student Essay Contest – is open to all students in grades 9-12. Length of essay is 500-750 words and 2017 theme – “cite examples of violence and tell what actions you would take or could take to promote peace.” Information and contest rules available at Deadline-Nov. 10, 2017

Wells Fargo Scholarship Program for People with Disabilities – In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Wells Fargo has committed $1 million over the next 4 years to help people with disabilities obtain the education or training necessary to succeed in the career path of their choice. Sixt Scholars Program – Sixt Rent A Car is pleased to offer 5 high school seniors graduating in 2018 the opportunity to receive a $5,000 scholarship to continue their education in college. Students must have a min. 3.7 GPA and plan to enroll full time in a 2-yr or 4-yr. college. Information and application are available at Deadline-Nov. 30, 2017

Edison Scholars Program – awarding $40,000 (4-year) scholarships to students majoring in the STEM fields: computer & information systems, engineering, engineering technology, management information systems, mathematics, natural resources and conservation or physical sciences. Burger King Scholars Program – awards scholarship to help graduating seniors offset the cost of attending college. Recipients are selected based on their GPA (min. 2.0), work experience, extracurricular activities and/or community service. AXA Achievement Scholarship Fund – provides scholarship awards to graduating high school seniors. Awards range from $2500 - $25,000 and are granted to seniors who plan to enroll full-time in an accredited 2-yr or 4-yr college/university for the 2017-18 academic year. Foot Locker Scholar Athlete Program – seeks to honor student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and strong leadership skills in sports, in their school and within their communities. Foot Locker Scholar Athletes embody good sportsmanship, strong moral character, display academic excellence and are confident and enthusiast leaders. Applicants must be current high school seniors who will be entering a 4-yr college in the Fall of 2018, be a member (in good standing) on a high school sports team or be involved in after-school sports (e.g. intramural, martial arts, etc.), have a min. 3.0 GPA and be a US citizen or permanent legal resident. APIASF (Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund) provides scholarships to underserved AAPI students who will be enrolling in a U.S. accredited college or university in the Fall. Students must have a min. 2.7 GPA and apply for federal financial aid using the FAFSA. Additional information and application are available at Deadline-January, 2018

The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program is a national program that awards college scholarships to high school seniors who embody the characteristics of President Ronald Reagan at their school, in the community, in the workplace and at home. Applicants must demonstrate the attributes of leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship; strong academic performance (min. 3.0 GPA), and plans to enroll full-time at an accredited 4-year college/university. Union Plus Scholarship Program – is offering grants ranging from $500 - $4000 to assist union members and their children to attend college. Applicants are evaluated based on academic ability, social awareness, financial need and content of essay. A min. 3.0 GPA is recommended. Students apply online at Deadline-Jan. 31, 2018

California State PTAoffers scholarship awards of $750 each to acknowledge the achievements of high school seniors for volunteer service in school and community. Seniors must be members of their school’s PTA/PTSA unit in good standing. Scholarships can be used for study at any accredited 2-yr or 4-yr college, or trade/technical school. The Jackie Robinson Foundation – provides scholarships to disadvantaged minority high school students, planning to attend an accredited 4-yr college/university. Sons of Italy Western Foundation – announces the availability of academic and athletic scholarships for graduating seniors in the Class of 2018. Awards are open to students who are wholly or partially of Italian descent and will be enrolling in an accredited trade school, college, university or community college in the Fall. SCHOLARSHIP FOR JUNIORS

Calvin Coolidge Scholars Program – is offering a full-ride, merit scholarship (covers tuition, room, board and expenses) for 4 years of undergraduate study at ANY accredited college or university in the U.S. The awards are for students planning to pursue ANY academic discipline of study. Students apply for the Coolidge scholarship during their junior year of high school.
