Martins Lane Structure, Chiltern

History:

  • A covered shelter was constructed in Martins Lane, Chiltern, last year after it became clear that the existing kiosk, which is on private land, would soon no longer be available.
  • Council and the Chiltern Lions Club contacted user groups and businesses inviting them to attend community meetings or comment on the proposed relocation of this kiosk.
  • Community discussion led to a proposal for a sheltered area in Martins Lane.
  • The structure as it is now has not met community expectations in relation to its function and fit within the heritage nature of the streetscape.
  • These very real concerns led to a petition with over 170 signatures being sent to Council to remove the structure.
  • Council officers met with the representatives who created the petition to discuss a way forward, and a report outlining next steps was put to the December 2014 Council Meeting.

Where to from here:

Council resolved at its December Meeting that further community consultation take place on this issue, based on the following three options:

  1. Leave the structure as it is.
  2. Modify the structure in accord with the concept drawing on the reverse side of this sheet. A power outlet is in place. (This concept was devised in consultation with the lead petitioners to create a more functional space)
  3. Remove the structure from Martins Lane.

A second report on the outcomes of this further community consultation will go to the 28 April Council Meeting.
