Creating a Newsletter in Microsoft Publisher

Getting Started

  • Open Microsoft Publisher
  • Choose Newsletters
  • Peruse the template choices and choose one. (Note: the templates you will see are all multi-page newsletters that you will need to turn into one pagers. If you want a one-page template, type it into the search box at the top right of your page.)
  • Fill in the information boxes on the right (optional).
  • Choose a color scheme, if desired. You may also handpick the colors for each part of your newsletter later.

Designing Your Newsletter

Once you finish inputting your data, your newsletter template will open. At this point, you will simply input your desired articles and graphics, change your fonts and colors (if desired), and then save your work! Here are some tips for changing the formatting:

Creating Text Boxes

  • Click on Insert on your standard toolbar
  • Choose text box
  • Use the mouse to draw the text box in the desired spot on your page.
  • To remove a text box, right click on one of its edges and choose cut or press delete.

Formatting Text Boxes (Layout)

  • Select the box by clicking on one of its edges.
  • You’ll know its selected when the small circles appear on its edge.
  • Right-click
  • Choose Format Text Box
  • In the dialog box that appears you can change the color of its border, its fill, the internal margins, or its size
  • Images
  • Go to Insert
  • Picture
  • Clip Art or From File if you’ve downloaded a pic from the internet and saved it to your thumbdrive.

Fonts

  • The great thing about Publisher is its similarity to Microsoft Word. You change the fonts the same way!
  • Change the font type and size via the formatting toolbar OR
  • Go to Format> Font and make your desired changes

Navigating the Newsletter

  • To zoom in on any portion, place your cursor in the desired area and press F9.
  • To see how changes will affect the finished product, go to File> Print Preview.
