A limited number of top-up awards of up to $25,000 (for a maximum combined award of $35,000) may be allocated to the highest ranked proposals that also identify a specific need for the additional funding.

The Connaught New Researcher Award is meant to provide support for research operating costs. Eligible expenses are to be consistent with the appropriate tri-agency guidelines for NSERC Discovery grants, CIHR Open Operating Grants or SSHRC Insight grants, with the exception of laptops which should only be included in application budgets when required for project-specific purposes (as opposed to general research). Proposals should clearly describe what role all research personnel will play in the research project. Questions on eligible expenses should be directed to the Connaught Secretariat.

b)Top-Up Funding Request (where applicable)

If you wish to request top-up funding, please elaborate on the specific need for the additional funding (up to an additional $25,000), and include an itemized budget in tabular format. Applications requesting top-up funds should clearly demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed project if funded at the up to $10,000 level, given that the number of top-up awards is limited. In doing so, reviewers will be able to more accurately estimate the productivity of the applicant, independent of any career interruptions or special circumstances.

Career interruptions occur when, for health, family or other reasons, an applicant is taken away from his or her research work for an extended period of time.

Special circumstances involve slow-downs in research productivity created by health, family or other reasons (i.e., the applicant was not taken completely away from his or her work).

In these cases, the applicant should explain the absence(s) and ask that this be taken into consideration by the reviewers. Include the start and end dates, and the reason(s) or a brief explanation of the absence(s).
