Lesson Plan Title: Wizard of Oz Word and Math Scramble 40 minutes.

Grade Level: Second Grade

CA Standards:

Math: 2.0 Students estimate, calculate, and solve problems involving addition and subtraction of two- and three-digit numbers:

2.2 Find the sum or difference of two whole numbers up to three digits long.

Science: (SIOP 3: Age and grade appropriate concepts) Physical Sciences a. Students know the position of an object can be described by locating it in relation to another object or to the background.

English Language Arts:

2.0 Reading Comprehension 2.7 Interpret information from diagrams, charts, and graphs.

Reading Word Analysis:

K - 2 Standards for Intermediate level students: Identify letters, words, and sentences.

Lesson Objectives: a. Content Objectives (SIOP 1: Clearly defined content objectives) To decode a puzzle of words and use that information to solve a math problem requiring addition and subtraction skills.

a. Process Objectives. To understand how to solve problems using English, math and science skills.

Thinking Process Learn to solve problems using English, math and science skills..

Value Process Work in a cooperative manner with other students.

c. Language Objectives (SIOP 2: Clearly defined language objectives)

Materials: (SIOP 4: Use of supplementary materials). Am using video, and a large yellow brick rode on the floor to create an ambience and give students experiences to help them better understand this lesson in the introduction, guided practice, independent practice and close sections of this lesson. I put this SIOP here to better understand the supplementary materials used.

Instruction: The students walk into a classroom with yellow bricks on the floor.

Intro: (17 minutes)

Today (May 15th) is the birthday of the author of the Wizard of Oz (Frank Baum) and it is also National Chocolate Chip Day. You will take a journey down the yellow brick road and if you use your English, math and science skills correctly you will find your way to a chocolate chip cookie (I’ll give it to you at lunch) by seeing the mighty Oz, me!

Start the lesson by having the students watch 15 minutes of the Wizard of Oz beginning with the scene where the tornado is taking Dorothy’s house down to the Munchkin’s town to the end of the scene when the Yellow Brick Road song ends.

Guided Practice: (4 - 5 minutes)

Hand out the paper at the bottom of the lesson to the students and explain the instructions beginning with:

Word Scramble:

Before you start your journey you need to know where to go. To find out where to go you need to at least find the words listed below and use the underlined letters to figure out where to go.

Answer: East

Science Scramble:

Unscramble the underlined letters (A T E S) by writing it here ______to find out where to go. After you write it go see the teacher to get further directions.

Answer: East is the direction. They will find out which direction to go by reading a compass that you have.

Math Scramble:

Begin on the first brick in the direction given to you by a special tool. Keep track of the total number of bricks you have traveled. For every step forward add (+) the number of bricks you took forward. For every step backward subtract (-) the number of bricks traveled. Circle the symbols you put in your problem and what is your final total?

Give the students the opportunity to ask questions to clarify what they are doing.

Independent Practice: (10 - 15 minutes)

Each student then works at their own pace to solve the problem. Work with students that have questions or address the group as a whole as needed.

SIOP 18: Consistently provide sufficient time for student response.

Close: ( 5 minutes)

Ask students who finish early to work as guides to help their table complete the problem. When each individual finishes draw a cookie on their paper and give them a cookie with their lunch.
