Questions and Answers

The questions that you submit are appreciated. We recognize that there will be uncertainties and challenges as you work to support your candidates.

Your insight and support continues to guide the Resource Center in developing a system that is aligned with the revised NB and the state mandates while providing you a solid support system.

FOR CONSISTENCY in information that is shared with candidates:

Always refer your candidates to the MUST READ document that is linked on the NBRC website. That document is updated as NB provides new information. As of now, the MUST READ document is available on the NBRC subsidy application page and will be added to the CANDIDATE page as soon as the updates are made to that page.

QUESTION (submitted 01/08/17)

Is NB still good in all states? Some have heard that is no longer true.

ANSWER:

Each state’s licensure system has their own rules for how NB fits. Please contact the individual state department of education in question to get the most current information.

QUESTION (submitted 01/08/17)

Can a candidate retake certain parts of Component 1 this year or do you have to retake entire component?

ANSWER:

Candidates do not need to complete all of Component #1. They should only select the parts that meet their needs for retaking. All of this is explained in the Illinois Retake Subsidy application.

QUESTION (submitted 01/08/17)

Next year will be year 3 for our school. How does it work during year 3? When scores are released in December some will find out they achieved, others will not. What will they do next year while waiting? Some could retake component 3, some don't need to.

ANSWER:

The intent of the NBPD cohorts is to have a continuation of candidates joining the cohort to maintain the minimum of 10 candidates. The team (admin., CCF and liaison) should have been recruiting all year to keep the cohort at ten candidates. Those that are in year three are invited and encouraged to attend the sessions starting in September. They could become part of the support for the new candidates. CCFs will also use sessions to discuss the upcoming announcement of the NEW NBCTs and to talk about what that means for your particular cohort and how they will handle the situation. Those who are retaking, will join an online ‘retake only’ cohort. Retake will not be offered in the cohorts.

QUESTION (submitted 01/08/17)

If candidates want to stay as year 3 candidates in the cohort do they pay out of pocket? How does it work for year 3 cost wise?

ANSWER:

Candidates continuing into year there as a candidate are still working on the components that haven’t been started or submitted for scoring. The components that have not been completed or paid for by ISBE, will be paid after the candidate registers with NBPTS, pays the $75 fee and submits/selects the components that they need to complete.

QUESTION (submitted 12/09/16)

Why can’t CCFs register for the reader position?

ANSWER:

The reason that CCFs are not able to be readers is because of the source of payment for the two positions comes through the ISBE Intent to Mentor funds which is limited to $1,500. Since the CCFs and readers are being paid through this source, they cannot work in both positions. All CCFs being paid $170 per month through the NBRC are to complete the Intent to Mentor registration to guarantee the payment of the additional $1,500 for their work as CCFs.

QUESTION (submitted 11/14/16):

What is the current status with the Intent to Mentor registration and logs?

ANSWER:

The funds for candidates, retakes, renewal and mentoring should be available in early-middle December. The paperwork is now being completed by ISU/ISBE and I’m working with ISBE in requesting that mentor hours be logged with the start date being July 1, 2016. All CCFs will receive a message from the NBRC when the official registration opens. At that time, I will provide the specifics as to when the actual logging of hours will start.

QUESTION (submitted 11/11/16):

Will there be readers for all candidates this year?

ANSWER:

The reader program was initiated 3 years ago and prior to that this support was not available. In order to maintain the reader support program, CCFs are strongly encouraged to send the reader registration message to at least two NBCTs. Unfortunately, if there are not enough readers to support our candidates, this service will be eliminated.
