Discussion of Aboriginal COP and Statement of Purpose for Aboriginal COP /
- Discussed the history of the Aboriginal COP and whether there was capacity for the Aboriginal COP to inform and attend other COPs.
- Think about sharing the role of Chair?
- Statement of Purpose to add:Commitment to and implementation of best practice in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities and Indigenous issues.
2017 Disability Stocktake Custody & Community & Case studies /
- There was discussion of whether if the 2017 Disability Stocktake in line with JJ’s Strategic Plan 2017-2020 which highlights the overrepresentation of Aboriginal young people in the CJS could be 3-4 questions of each Juvenile Justice Centre and each JJ Community office about Aboriginal young people with disability.
- There was lively discussion including what do you think is missing in supporting this young person adequately ?
- What cultural tools/ resources do you use to support the disability or understand this young Aboriginal person?
- Also it was felt that it was important to ask specific questions of the ETUs and staff in the strategies they put in place.
- Also should there be a specific question about NDIS and their understanding of how it might be important in addressing the risks of re-offending.
Open Up and Info Share /
- Discussion of the 10-18/ 21 year age group in JJ and the difficulty for young people with disability who live and lead chaotic lives being able to cope or become institutionalised because there is a degree of order in custody where they know where they sleep and get 3 meals a day but this is not reality so how do we equip young people to cope and not end up in the adult system because again it is seen as safer.
- Peta Turner agreed to line up if possible an NDIS Specialist Support Coordinator for the October Aboriginal COP.
NDIS /
- There was general discussion and questions about NDIS- Loretta will provide a case study.
Joint Protocol from Ombos & possible training on 10/10/2017 /

- Consider any new speakers wanted and who should do the inviting:
- Dr Megan Williams UWS- possible after May
- Rick Welsh, Manager The Shed funded by UWS- spoke at Race & Incarceration Conference making a lot of sense about many things that blocked reintegration for Aboriginal people when they leave prison and are in the community.
