What responsibilities will you have in this role?
Reporting to the Director of the School of Early Childhood, the Manager Childcare Lab School is responsible for the effective operation of community/school based child care centres that are also used as teaching facilities for students enrolled in the College’s Early Childhood Education programs. The Manager Childcare Lab School plans the centre's operations to ensure the provision of a balanced program, with emphasis on maximizing social, emotional and intellectual development of the children in the program.
The incumbent is accountable for ensuring that the Centre maintains standards prescribed by the Ministry of Education Child and Family Early Years Act; the College of Early Childhood Educator Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and adheres to the requirements pertaining to the Purchase of Service Agreement with Toronto Children’s Services. The Manager effectively coordinates and monitors the training experience for College students, hires and manages staff at the centre, and oversees quality assurance protocols to ensure that the centre meets a high standard of practice.
- Responsible for Child Care Centre (Lab School) Operation and Administration; supervises the day to day operation of the centre ensuring compliance to various Acts and Regulations.
- Provides high standards and a safe, healthy and caring environment for the children, staff and students.
- Manages centre’s staff and students; maintains a high level of performance by recruiting, interviewing, training, developing, evaluation and monitoring the Early Childhood Educators, Assistants and Cook.
- Provides direction and guidance on matters pertaining to the ECE job description (curriculum, student educator evaluation, parent involvement and appropriate practices.
- Demonstrates leadership and effective team building; promotes staff professional development through exemplary applied learning.
- Ensures that curriculum and all aspects of the program reflect the principles of the School of Early Childhood in partnership with the ECD faculty.
- Contributes to the education of the ECE students by managing a high quality learning environment which models/practices congruent with the academic program.
- Directs/coordinates student placement schedule within the centre and supervises the subsequent evaluation of their progress.
- Liaises with faculty on current issues, discusses expectations; participates in midterm and final evaluation conferences with students, teacher and faculty.
- Contributes to the financial planning and budgetary control of the College; controls expenditures and participates in centre budget planning through projection costs and income.
- Ensures financial viability by maintaining enrolment targets; works collaboratively with College departments to ensure compliance with College policies, procedures and processes.
- Plans and organizes ongoing communication and marketing with workplace partners, families, professional, government and community organizations.
- Hosts international/local site visits; being an active participant within the internal/external College community by participation on various committees.
- Supports, plans, attends and participates in College events; partnership with other educational and professional organizations (i.e.) O.I.S.E., Ryerson, Health in the City, Social Justice.
- Manages staff within the mandate of the Collective Agreement, College Policies and Procedures, Code of Conduct, etc.
- Other related duties as assigned.
What qualifications do you need for this role?
- Two year Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in Early Childhood Education and a four year related degree or a post graduate certificate in Early Years Leadership and Management.
- Minimum five years of experience in front line Early Childhood Development role with a variety of age groups.
- Two year’s leadership experience in an early years setting.
- Member in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators.
- Clear Criminal Reference Check.
- Immunizations as per Ministry of Education requirements.
- Experience handing serious occurrence or medical situations and/or emergency situations, with the ability to identify which course of action to take, depending on severity of specific situation.
- Demonstrated experience in relationship development including building and maintaining the formal and informal network relationships and relationships that are important in maintaining a positive reputation of the child care centre and the College.
- Ability to administer policies, practices and programs which emphasizes the developmental needs of the children and an optimal learning environment for the students of the College.
- Excellent problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills are required.
- Knowledge of current theoretical theory and its application to practice; ensures that staff team is informed and guides them in implementation according to this knowledge so that the applied learning environment is congruent with the Academic program.
- Exceptional Leadership and decision making skills, including the ability to provide technical and/or functional guidance to staff and/or students in various learning environments.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, email competency and knowledge of accounting programs.
- Effectively manage resources (budget, staff, facilities) and scheduling to meet licensing and safety guidelines and ensure quality programming.
- Demonstrated leadership in delivering excellent service to others as this is key in supporting the success of our students and our College.
- Strong communication, collaboration and teamwork skills.
- Effective ability to interact with others and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience and styles.
- Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.
