MAT 271 Calculus I - Direct PlacementGuide

(for students applying to the Associate in Engineering Program)

Admission into the Associate in Engineeringprogram requires completion of the prerequisite courses MAT 171 Precalculus Algebra and MAT 172 Precalculus Trigonometry ORDirect Placement into MAT 271 Calculus I.

It is the student’s responsibility to provide official documentation (transcripts and/or test scores) which confirm placement into MAT 271 has been met.

For more information or to have your documentation reviewed, see an advisor in the Academic Advising Center on the Wilmington Campus (located in Union Station, U246) or a counselor in the Student Services office at either the Wilmington Campus (located in Union Station, U240)or the North Campus (located in NA 100).

Once you have met with an advisor or counselor and placement into MAT 271 has been confirmed, your major will be changed from pre-Associate in Engineering to Associate in Engineering.

A student may PLACE DIRECTLY into MAT 271 Calculus I if the student has met at least one (1) of the following criteria within the past five (5) years (must be no more than five (5) years old by the first day of the semester for which the student enrolls in MAT 271):

  1. A score of 90 or higher on the ACCUPLACER College-Level Math (CLM) test.

CFCC Testing Services offers the ACCUPLACER College-Level Math (CLM) test.

This test may be taken at CFCC if the student has demonstrated proficiency in DMA’s 010-080 (Math Pt. 1 and 2 of the Placement Test) OR has received credit from any available pathway for DMA’s 010-080.

  1. A grade of C or higher in an AP Calculus course and an unweighted HS GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  1. A score of 46 or higher on the trigonometry section of the ACT Compass MathPlacementTest.
  1. A score of 580 or higher on the SAT Math and a grade of C or higher in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study Pre-Calculus course or an equivalent course from another state.
  1. A score of 27 or higher on the ACT Math and a grade of C or higher in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study Pre-Calculus course or an equivalent course from another state.
  1. A score of 560 or higher on the SAT Subject Test in Mathematics Level 2.
  1. A score of 2 or higher on the AP Calculus AB Exam.
