Technology Connection: / :  SMART Board
:  PowerPoint
Procedures: / :  Anticipatory Set: TTW ask the class to define the word “trait”. After writing several of the students responses on the board, TTW bring up the website www.dictionary.com. This website is located in the attachments tab of the Notebook file.
:  Modeling: TTW read the story I Feel Silly. TTW use the PowerPoint of the story. It is in the attachment tab in the Notebook file. This story gives character traits for the character in the story. I think all students can relate to the traits of this character. TTW stop on some of the pages in the story to write a sentence using commas and quotation marks. This will model for the students how to write sentences showing character traits.
Guided Practice: TTW use pages 2 – 6 of the Notebook file to guide the students in writing sentences showing character traits. TS should each have a dry erase board, marker and eraser. TTW read the first sentence to the class. Then TSW write the second sentence to the students telling them the punctuation is missing. TSW write that sentence on their dry erase boards. TTW use the make wand to reveal to the class where the punctuation should be placed. This will be done for pages 2-6 in the Notebook file.
Independent Practice: TTW use pages 7-12 for this part of the lesson. On these pages, the teacher has a sentence written telling the character trait. TSW write their own sentence telling something that character might say if they felt that way. TSW make sure they place the punctuation in the correct place. TT will rotate students to the SMART Board to write on it. The rest of the students will write on their dry erase boards. If TTW rotate the room helping the students think of things students may say if their felt that way.
:  Review/Closure: TTW teach the students some hand gestures to use while she reads sentences orally. TSW use the hand gestures to show the teacher where the punctuation mark should be placed. Use page 13 of the notebook file. Click on the picture to see the video. TTW say the following sentences orally.
Becky said, “I can’t wait to see Micky Mouse.” (happy)
John said, “I should have taken more time to study.” (disappointed)
Pam said, “Let me carry that bag for you.” (helpful)
