Digimap Quick Guide
What is Digimap?
Digimap is a collection of EDINA services that deliver maps and map data of Great Britain to UK tertiary education. Data is available either to download to use with appropriate application software such as GIS or CAD, or as maps generated by Digimap online. There are three collections:
Digimap - Ordnance Survey Collection- Allows users to view and print contemporary and current Ordnance Survey maps of any location in Great Britain at a series of predefined scales.
Historic Digimap - Offers historic Ordnance Survey maps of Great Britain to UK Higher and Further Education.
Geology Digimap - Delivers geological maps and data from the British Geological Survey (BGS) to UK Tertiary Education. Geology maps and data are available at scales of 1:50,000, 1:250,000 and 1:625,000.
On- and off-campus login
- In order to access Digimap you must be a fully registered student or member of staff at UEL.
- Log on to the network in the normal way. Click on the Mozilla Firefoxicon from the desktop, or from the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.
- Open the Library and Learning Services website at
- Go to Quick Links.
- Select Databases and E-Journals.
- Go to the Databases A-Z list.
- Select D and scroll to Digimap from the list of databases.
- Select Digimap Ordnance Survey Data Collection from the list of databases.
- Click On- and off-campus login.
- Click LoginVia UK Federation.
- Type inUniversity of East London from the list and click University of East Londonwhen it appears.
- Type in your Athens username and password and click the Log-in button.
- When you access Digimap for the first time, after you enter your Athens details you will be directed to fill out a form and complete the registration process. This involves accessing a verification email. The on-screen instructions will guide you through this.

Basic features of Digimap
- First click the link for either Digimap Ordnance Survey, Historic Digimap or Geology Digimap from left hand side of the homepage.
- Within each of these you will find a ROAM option. To access it, click the ROAM link that appears in the centre of the screen in blue text to begin viewing maps.
- Within the ROAM mode, you can then click on the Searchtab in the top right hand corner and enter a postcode, place name or grid reference.
Navigating the maps
The 4 white arrows in the blue circle to the top right of the screen allow you to move around the maps. The ‘+’ and ‘-’ icons will zoom in and out.
Map contentand map information
To access these two features, click their tabs which are located at the left of the screen in ROAM mode. However, ROAM mode within Historic Digimap does not have the map content feature. These features tell you more about the map you are viewing. For example clickingMap Informationprovides information such as current map scale and coordinates.
Printing maps
To print, click on Print in the top left hand corner. Give the map a name. Choose print format and orientation. Then click on Generate Print File. A box will appear indicating that the map is ready. Click OK. Click on Open in the next dialogue box and your map will appear. You can then send it to print.
Saving Maps
Clicking Save and then selecting My Map… as a destination allows you to save maps for later in the My map area with a file name of your choice. To retrieve these maps click Open and then My Map…
Map Tools
Clicking Map Tools at the top of the screen allows you to annotate maps with the Annotation tools.You can also measure distances and areas with the Measurement tools option.
In Ancient Roam and Geology Roam you will find the above information symbol in the top right corner. When informationis available – which often depends on zoom level - this icon will be clickable. After clicking it you can then click an area on the map and Digimap will reveal information such as the Rock type if in the Geology collection.
