Job Title:Volunteering Programme Communications Apprentice

Employer:Trustees of the Royal Air Force Museum (‘the Museum’)

Reports to: Volunteering Manager, London

Responsible for:Generating communications content associated with the Volunteering Programme

Fixed term contract:15-month contract (1 April 2018 – 30 June 2019)

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

The Royal Air Force Museum has a Vision for Volunteering that aspires to make volunteering a central part of the Museum’s offer and to make volunteering at the Museum an organised, structured and resourced activity attracting a wide range of people from the local and regional community.

As a member of the central Volunteering Programme department your role will be vital to supporting the delivery of the Volunteering Strategy, which directs the way in which volunteering is developed across the Royal Air Force Museum. The role is to provide support to the Volunteering Managersto:

  • raise the profile of our volunteers and volunteering activities
  • collating and sharing information and stories about the contribution volunteers are making to our Centenary Programme, recognising our sponsors appropriately
  • support team members in our Marketing and PR departments to create content for the Museum’s websites, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, newsletters and RADAR Magazine
  • help design and deliver engaging and relevant content
  • support the continued creation of a culture of feedback and dialogue with our volunteers
  • support all our volunteers to receive an appropriate level of communication from the Museum about volunteering
  • help us to use external volunteering initiatives, such as National Volunteers’ Week to promote and celebrate our volunteers and the work of the Volunteering Team
  • help capture feedback and evaluation for reporting purposes

As an apprentice, you will be line managed by the Volunteering Manager, London and learn transferable digital marketing skills, in additional to the qualification which will you will undertake one day a week.

Digital Marketing duties

  1. Adhere to and support the Communications Team in the roll out of best practice guidelines for theuse of social media by staff and volunteers promoting the Museum
  2. Create agreed content using video, photography, audio and written copy
  3. Capture volunteers experience and volunteering activity including a day to day experience, project experience, profile interviews etc
  4. Identify potential stories and activities, through proactively and continually talking with key volunteer and staff contact at both sites
  5. Encourage volunteers to participate
  6. Ensuring all content produced has an identified output before being created
  7. To follow briefs as discussed and agreed
  8. To create content that can be used for more than one purpose and audience
  9. To assist with evaluating our volunteering activities across the organisation
  10. To support the department in the preparation of reports, presentations, statistics and other documents to specified deadlines.
  11. To attend meetings and external events to represent volunteering and understand how volunteers contribute to the work of the Museum.
  12. To develop an understanding of the Volunteering Programme, structure, policies, systems and procedures to enable you to effectively communicate information and advice to staff and volunteers.

Hours and Physical Conditions

  1. This is a 15-monthfixed-term position.
  2. Hours: Working 40 hours per week, 5 days out of 7, including one day, day release to attend college during term time. Some weekend, Bank Holiday and evening work will be required.Work at Cosford and other outreach/community sites will be required.
