Minutes for Meeting #5 of the General Education Subcommittee of the UCC

Day/Time: Monday (1/31/05), 1:30 – 3:00

Location: Padnos 308

Present: Rick Albrecht, Alan Bell, Joan Borst, Andrea Bostrom, Jan Brashler,Jay Cooper, Karen Libman, Hugh McGuire, Kelly Parker, Paul Stephenson, Janet Vigna, Kathryn Waggoner, Frank Ward, Wendy Wenner, Judy Whipps.

5.1 Approval of the Agenda

The agenda was amended and approved.

5.2 Approval of the Minutes from Meeting #4.

The amended minutes were approved.

5.3 Report from Dean

Dean Wenner indicated that she expects to initiate the search for the new Director of General Education. Dean Wenner indicated that most general education courses are enrolled to capacity, and she expressed her concern that students are experiencing increased difficulty in fulfilling their thematic requirements given the number of available seats. She will be soliciting more seats from the appropriate Deans/Chairs. Dean Wenner also informed the GES that GVSU will continue to place a priority on improving the freshman experience.

5.4 Report from Chair

The Chair updated the GES regarding a report that he gave to the UAS.

5.5Discussion/Action of proposals under consideration:

  • ENG 335 - Literature of American Minorities (UCC Log#4341)

After some discussion regarding standardizing the practices of the GES – the GES approved a motion to reconsider ENG 335. Then the GES tabled this proposal and the Chair will ask proposers to: (1) address how ENG 335 satisfies the information literacy requirement and (2) provide more justification as to how ENG 335 satisfies the GE skill objectives.

  • CLA 287 - Roman Law (UCC Log#4342)

After some discussion regarding standardizing the practices of the GES – the GES approved a motion to reconsider CLA 287. Then the GES tabled this proposal and the Chair will ask proposers to address how CLA 287 satisfies the information literacy requirement.

  • LIB 100 - Introduction to Liberal Education (UCC Log#4459)

The proposed title change was passed. LIB 100 is part of the Philosophy and Literature Foundation Category.

  • PA 270 - Public Administration (UCC Log#4441)

The proposed title change was passed. PA 270 is part of the Social SciencesFoundation Category.

  • PHY 307 - Light and Sound (UCC Log#4409)

The proposed title change was passed. PHY 307 is part of the Perception Theme.
