Updated: 2015-12-15-11:15

The engine of the Golden Temple Superfast mail that runs between Mumbai and Amritsar caught fire near Jaroda railway station, seven kilometres away from Muzaffarnagar railway station on Tuesday morning. No casualties from the passengers or railway crew were reported.

The fire broke out at around5:30 am, when the train was stopped as the engine started getting overheated. Two fire tenders were sent to the spot from the Muzaffarnagar fire-brigade station to douse the flames, however only one was put to use.

Fortunately, due to the chilly weather, the temperature was about 5 degree Celsius and thus the fire could not spread much.

Meanwhile, another engine was called from Meerut, which is 44 kilometres away from Nara Jaroda. The train suffered an overall stoppage of two-hours and finally departed at7:25 amfor Delhi.

Due to this stoppage, three passenger trains were delayed from their scheduled time. The commuters, especially the daily-passengers who used to catch trains to reach their place of work had to face difficulties in this bone-chilling weather.

"On Tuesday, the Golden Temple superfast mail was running late by an hour then its scheduled time of4:30 am. As the superfast mail remained stuck about two hours on the main track, three passenger trains - 2DS (54474), DMU (74002) and Meerut Shuttle (54522) - which run between Saharanpur and Delhi, had to stop at other stations for that period," said, Chaman Singh, Station master of Jaroda Nara railway station.

Senior Superintendent of Meerut city railway station, RP Tripathi, told TOI, "To get the Golden Temple superfast train back running, we sent an engine of a goods-train. The train was then departed for Delhi while another engine was sent and the goods-train was departed for Najibabad."
