I. The Benjamin Generation
A. The Benjamin Generation
1. Jacob had 2 wives Leah (Law) and Rachel (Grace)
a. Leah and the 2 bondwomen – 10 sons (Law)
b. Rachel is at first barren, but eventually gives birth to Joseph.
c. Once Joseph was born, Leah and the bondwomen stop baring. Why? Jesus fulfills the Law.
2. Joseph is a type of Jesus.
a. Joseph was his father’s beloved son; Jesus is the Father’s Beloved Son.
b. Jacob loved Joseph more than his other 10 sons; God loves Jesus more than the 10 commandments or the Law.
c. Joseph is shown feeding the flock; Jesus is the Good Shepherd.
d. Joseph is sent to and rejected by his brethren; Jesus is sent to and rejected by his own.
e. Joseph dreams that all his family will bow down to him; every knee will bow to Jesus.
f. Joseph was sold into slavery 20 pieces of silver; Jesus was sold out for 30 pieces of silver.
g. Joseph saved his family and Egypt from drought; Jesus is the Savior of the world.
h. Joseph in prison with butler and baker one killed and one lived; Jesus hung on the cross between two thieves one lives eternally and one dies.
i. Joseph was given a new Egyptian name from Pharaoh which means “savior of the world” at age 30 and married a Gentile wife; Jesus is Savior of the world, entered ministry at age 30, and is married to the Gentile church.
j. Joseph became the bread of life for Egypt; Jesus is Bread of Life for the world.
k. Joseph’s brothers didn’t recognize him at his 1st appearance but at 2nd he reveals himself; the Jews didn’t recognize Jesus at His 1st appearance but all will at His 2nd.
3. Benjamin the 2nd and last son of Rachel
a. (Gen. 35:18 AMP) Rachel, in death, names him Ben-oni (son of my sorrow), but his father named him Benjamin (son of the right hand). The only son named by the father.
· Rachel’s death speaks of Benjamin as a final generation.
· All other generations (Elijah, Davidic, Joshua) have been named by the church, but God names this last generation of grace.
b. Tell the story of Joseph as Prime Minister.
· 7 yrs of plenty followed by 7 yrs of famine
· Joseph recognizes brothers but they don’t recognize him.
· (Gen. 42:24) Releases them from prison and tells them to bring back their youngest brother, while holding Simeon (hearing) captive.
· Secretly restores all of their grain money.
c. (Gen. 43:15-16) “slaughter an animal”(Heb. 5:13)
d. (Gen. 43:29-34) “…God be gracious to you…but Benjamin’s serving was five times as much…”
· Grace identifies the Benjamin generation!
· 5 is the number of grace:
o 5th mention of Noah – Gen. 6:8
o 5th mention of Ruth – Ruth 2:5
o 5th mention of Boaz – Ruth 2:10
o 5th mention of David in 1 Sam. 16:22
o 5th mention of Esther – Esther 2:15
o Abram/Sarai to Abraham/Sarah
o Exo. 33- God interacted with Moses – Grace mentioned 5 times.
o All the measurements of the tabernacle of Moses are all increments of 5.
o 5-fold ministry
o 5 offerings (burnt, grain, peace, sin, trespass)
o David’s sack had 5 smooth stones
o Jesus fed the multitude of 5,000 men with 5 loaves and 2 fish; he made them sit in groups of 50.
e. (Gen. 44:1-2) “…put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest.”
· Silver = redemption; bronze = judgment; gold = deity
· Redemption is in the mouth of Benjamin!
f. (Gen. 45:1-5) Joseph makes himself known to his brothers.
g. (Gen. 45:18-28) “…but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of garments.”
· 300 = the number of victory
o Gideon conquered Midianites with 300
o Enoch walked with God 300 years
o Samson defeated Philistines with 300 foxes
o Alabaster box oil could have been sold for 300 denarii
· We have the victory of redemption!
