Daily ATV Circle Check Procedure – Version 1.0

This is a guide for the ATV daily checklist. For further information of clarification please consult the operators manual as this is simply a condensed, easy-read guide for completing the daily checklist. The acronym TCLOC has been implemented as a means to more easily remember the steps involved.

T= Tires and wheels:

  1. Check the air pressure in the tires, as inconsistent tire pressure will affect the handling of your ATV. Ensure all tire pressures are the same. Check pressure during start-up and once a week, otherwise use visual inspection only as to not deflate tires.
  2. Check tires for mud buildup, wear and penetrations.
  3. Check rims for dents and weak seals with the tire that may cause problems.
  4. Check brakes for wear, damage or warpage,
  5. Check for anything wedged in between the tire and the suspension, chassis or drivetrain.

C= Cables:

  1. Check brake cables for damage.
  2. Ensure park break works and can remain engaged.
  3. Check non-electrical cables, ensure they are not covered with mud or sticks.
  4. Ensure winch cable is not kinked, bent or frayed.
  5. Check that the electrical component of the winch is functioning by pulling it in and out.

L= Lights and Electrical:

  1. Turn on lights to ensure they work and care clear of mud or dirt. If thy do not work check that the bulb is not burnt out, that it is not faulty and that it is the correct bulb.
  2. Ensure the fuses, bulb contact points and wire connections are in good condition and are not bent or frayed.
  3. Check battery connections and clean with a wire brush if necessary.
  4. Is your ATV equipped with a pull start? Can you pull start it?
  5. Check ignition coil for cracks or damage. Check connections (sparkplug, ground wire and battery leads)

O= Oils, Fuel and Fluids:

  1. Check fuel level and note if it is old or contaminated. Check that the fuel cap is securely in place.
  2. Check the coolant, it should be yellow and have a sweet smell.
  3. Check that the radiator cap seals properly.
  4. Check the oil, should be light in colour. If black, it will need to be changed soon.
  5. Check spark plugs to ensure caps are connected.
  6. Spark plugs should be clean, not corroded or covered in oil.

C= Chassis and Suspension:

  1. Start by checking the overall condition of the ATV and note any dents, scratches or deformities to the body.
  2. Check to ensure the license plate is attached and properly secures (with stickers) and is free of mud or dirt.
  3. Check the seat for cracks and tears.
  4. Check the steering and frame neck for damage or bends and feel for looseness.
  5. For symmetry, park the ATV on an even surface and check that both sides look identical.
  6. Bounce each corner to estimate whether the shocks are performing similarly.
  7. Check for dents, cracks or damage to A-arms, swing arms and frame.
  8. If your ATV has suspension adjustments, check to see that they are properly adjusted for your load.
  9. Check shocks for oil leaks.
