2016 47th Annual Texas Narcotic Officers’ Association Training Conference

“The Will To Survive: Dealing with the Aftermath of Trauma”

Tuesday, August 23. 2016

1300 – 1700 Hrs

Dr. Bobby E. Smith

TNOA is proud to offer a Special Presentation by world renowned international speaker and retired Louisiana State Trooper, Dr. Bobby Smith. Dr. Bobby Smith is one of the most sought after motivational lecturers in the United States.

Dr. Bobby Smith will discuss with a unique blend of seriousness and humor, how to deal with the tragedies of life. All of us experience the unfortunate reality of emotional and physical losses. Dr. Smith teaches the importance of not taking a single day or person for granted. He further explains how we often learn as children that big boys don’t cry and that to ask for help is a sign of weakness. This results in the accumulation of grief and loss that we may be unwilling, and sometimes unable, to process. However, avoiding or suppressing emotions does not mean they go away.

Dr. Bobby Smith explains that we may choose to store the pain in what he refers to as the “dead ducks in the closet.” Traumatic events often take their toll on one’s physical, mental, and emotional health, as well as impacting relationships and careers.

This is a subject that will benefit everyone regardless of your assignment, rank or size of your agency. You will walk away with values that will help you cope with the aftermath of a traumatic event.

“Your family is the most important thing you will ever have…not your job.” – Dr. Bobby Smith.

Dr. BobbySmith began his career in 1973 in criminal justice by studying at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and by working as a police officer at local police agencies and later advancing to the Louisiana State Police. His assignments have included patrol, investigations, narcotics, personnel and training. As a Louisiana State Trooper, Bobby was shot and blinded in the line of duty in March of 1986. This traumatic event not only stole his eyesight, confidence and independence, but also the career he had worked so hard to attain. Learning how to deal with the struggles of being a blind man, Bobby discovered he could bring hope to those around him. To help him in this venture Bobby returned to college and received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology.

This four-hour seminar is TCOLE Certified and NO OTHER TRAINING CLASSES WILL BE OFFERED ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 23, 2016. SPOUSES are welcome to attend.
