Short report

ETH EduApp project

news: The Edu App is now available. Please visit:

The ETH EduApp project involves a mobile application which both assists ETH Zurich students in their student lives and supports interaction during teaching. The EduApp consists primarily of a back-end application and apps which run on smartphones and tablets with different operating systems. Via a web application, lecturers and semester spokespersons can set up activities in the back-end application which can then be made available to students via the app.

Fig. 1: How the ETH EduApp functions

The following functions are possible using the ETH EduApp:

Timetable

  • Students authenticate their identities and receive their personal timetables in a scrollable list.
  • The next courses in the vicinity are listed and shown on a map.
  • Further information on a course, e.g. links and course materials, can be called up.

As long as the student has the authorisation, four functions are available:

Navigation

  • Display of the building plan with course room on the basis of Google Maps
  • Directions to the course location

Clicker

  • The app offers a classroom response system (clicker) for use in courses. Students may use it to answer multiple choice single-answer or multiple choice multi-answer questions, or to enter answers to other questions directly.
  • The Auswertung is displayed for students in the app and for lecturers in the web application.

Backchannel

  • The app offers a backchannel to courses which allows students to submit comments and questions regarding the current course. Feedback may be anonymous if the lecturer agrees.

Semester feedback

This is a channel for course feedback which is set up by the semester spokesperson. It is available to student input regarding the quality of courses. In contrast to the backchannel it may only be viewed by students of the course series.
