At Tiddlywinks Day Nursery we make sure the nurseryis a safeenvironmentfor children,parents,staffandvisitorsbycarryingoutsafetychecksonaregularbasis inaccordancewiththetimescales setoutinthenurserychecklists. Theseinclude dailychecksofthepremises,indoorsandoutdoors,andallequipmentandresources beforethechildrenaccessanyoftheareas.Thechecksarerecorded toshowany issuesandsolutions.

Thispolicyshouldbereadinconjunctionwiththefiresafety, risk assessments,visits andoutingsandtheequipmentandresourcespolicies.

Allstaffshouldbeawareof potentialhazardsin the nurseryenvironmentandmonitor safetyatalltimes.

Riskassessments

Riskassessmentsdocumentthe hazard,who couldbe harmed,existingcontrols,the seriousness oftherisk/injury,anyfurtheractionneededtocontroltherisk,whois responsibleforwhataction,when/howoftenwilltheactionbeundertaken, andhow willthisbemonitoredandcheckedandbywhom.

Thenurserycarriesoutwrittenriskassessments atleastannually.Theseare regularly reviewedandcoverpotentialriskstochildren,staffandvisitorsatthe nursery.Whencircumstances changeinthenursery,e.g.asignificantpieceof equipmentisintroduced;wereviewourcurrentriskassessmentorconductanew riskassessmentdependentonthenatureofthischange.

Allstaffaretrainedintheriskassessmentprocesstoensureunderstandingand compliance.

Alloutingsawayfromthenurseryareindividuallyriskassessed.Formoredetails refertothevisitsandoutingspolicy.

Electricalequipment

  • Allelectricalcablesarekeptoutofthereachofchildrenwhereverpossible and shieldedbyfurniturewheretheyneedtobe atfloorlevel

•Electricalsocketsareallriskassessedandanyappropriatesafetymeasures arein placeto ensurethesafetyofthechildren.

Dangeroussubstances

Alldangeroussubstances includingchemicalsMUSTbekeptinlockedareasoutof children’sreach.Allsubstances mustbekeptintheiroriginalcontainerswiththeir originallabelsattached.SafetyDataSheets(ControlofSubstancesHazardousto Health(COSHH))andriskassessmentsmustbekeptforallsubstancesandthe appropriatepersonalprotectiontakene.g.gloves,apronandgoggles.

Hotdrinksandfood

Hotdrinksmustonlybeconsumedinthestaffroom.Nocanneddrinks,sweetsor crispsaretobekeptorconsumedinthenurseryrooms.

Transportandoutings

Thenurseryhasacomprehensive documentedpolicyrelatingtooutings,which incorporates allaspectsofhealthandsafetyproceduresincludingthearrangements fortransportingand thesupervisionofchildrenwhenawayfromthenursery.

Roomtemperatures

•Staffshouldbe aware ofroomtemperaturesinthe nurseryandshouldensure thattheyaresuitableatalltimes. Thereisathermometerin eachroomto ensurethisismonitored

•Staffmustalwaysbeawareofthedangersofbabiesandyoungchildren beingtoowarmortoocold

•Temperaturesshouldnotfallbelow18°Cinthebabyroomsand16°Cinall otherareas

Watersupplies

•Afreshdrinkingsupplyisavailableandaccessibletoallchildren,staffand visitors

•Allhotwatertapsaccessibletochildrenarethermostaticallycontrolledto ensurethatthetemperatureofthewaterdoesnotexceed40°C.

Thechecklistsusedinthe nursery are kept in the main office. Daily checklists are in each of the nursery rooms
