Materials:

Handout 1 – Name Tags

Teacher Resource 1 – Respectful Communication

Card stock, oak tag or construction paper for name tags

Crayons or markers

Music (Optional)

Procedures:

  1. Begin class by warming up with a Trust Walk. All except the leader place hands on shoulders of the person in front. The Leader leads without giving any verbal cues. The line is led by using body language and movement. Teacher may play music while group walks. When the music stops, the students stop and change leaders. The Leader moves to the back of the line and the next person becomes Leader.

2.  The teacher follows instructions on Handout 1 – Name Tags to help students develop their own personalized name tags.

3.  As students are completing Name Tags, use Handout 2 – Respectful Communication to lead a discussion about the same. Ask students to give examples of respectful communication, respectful listening, etc. Explain that they will be sharing Name Tags with classmates and discuss expectations for respectful communication.

4.  When Name Tags are complete, the teacher collects them and gives to students at random. Students will then take turns interpreting the information for the class.

Discussion:

·  What are the benefits of people treating each other with respect?

·  Agree or disagree: Courtesy and politeness are a lot of nonsense.

·  How do we demonstrate respect through our actions?
