The Cold Springs Ranger District on the Ouachita National Forest is planning to advertise two
GS 04/05/06 Forestry Technicians in the near future. These positions are established on a
Forest Service unit to perform a variety of timber sale preparation duties. Duties to perform
these tasks include:
-Marking timber to be cut and or left in a timber sale
-Tree data collection using a portable data recorder
-Use of GPS to determine acreages of harvest units
-Use of computer systems and programs
These are permanent positions (at least 40 hours a week) with the full range of federal
government benefits. Duty station will be Waldron, Arkansas.

Waldron is the county seat for Scott County and has a population of approximately 3,200.
The county’s population is about 10,500 and National Forest land comprises of 80% of
Scott County. The Cold Springs District manages approximately 345,000 acres of
national forest system land, two rifle ranges, and three recreation areas.
Facilities in the area include: a consolidated public school with K-4, 5-8, and 9-12. Limited satellite classes can be taken from Rich Mountain Community College locally and the main campus is located in Mena approximately 35 miles south. University of Arkansas at Fort Smith is located 46 miles north via State highway 71. Fort Smith is the second largest city in Arkansas. Other local facilities include pharmacies, a small hospital, physicians, nursing home, retirement homes, daycare facilities, library, local weekly newspapers, various civic organization, motels, restaurants, three main banks, a small airport and numerous churches representing most denominations.
Industries include: Tyson Foods, Inc. (The largest employer in the area), Wal-Mart, home-owned furniture stores, and manufacturers, and several privately owned grocery and convenience stores.
There is no government housing available. There are limited rental houses available but a
good market for purchasing homes.
