The H.E. “Doc” Kidder Memorial Trust Scholarship
The H.E. (Doc) Kidder Scholars
History
Dr. H.E. Kidder, Professor Emeritus of Animal Sciences, had a distinguished career at West Virginia University, beginning in 1954 and ending with his retirement in 1988. “Doc” was recognized for his excellence in teaching, his dedication to students, and his service to the livestock industry of West Virginia. Upon his death in 1989, Dr. Kidder’s will created a trust fund to provide scholarships to selected students of the Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Consumer Sciences at West Virginia University to aid them in their continued education in graduate or professional school. The scholarship program was initiated in 1992.
Selection Criteria
Applicants must be a current junior or senior pursuing a major in the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences in the Davis College. Applicants must provide proof of acceptance into a graduate or professional school program prior to final selection. Applicants pursuing professional or graduate studies that West Virginia University does not offer or that another institution serves better shall be entitled to attend that institution.
Selection is based on academic performance (cumulative grade point average must exceed 3.0) with added consideration for evidence of leadership abilities and financial need. The committee, which cannot exceed nine members, consists of the scholarship committee from the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences, the trustees of the fund, an appointee from the Dean of the Davis College, and a representative of the WVU Scholarship Program. Applicants may not be members of the selection committee or in the immediate families of the selection committee members. The selection committee does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, age, handicap, veteran status, religion, sexual orientation, color, or national origin. The selection committee reviews guidelines for the scholarship every three years and makes the appropriate revisions. The director of the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences, in conjunction with the trustees of the fund, manages the scholarship.
Support Level
Scholarships cover tuition and fees up to $10,000 annually for a continuous period of up to 10 semesters, subject to annual review by the selection committee including at minimum a statement of enrollment for the applicant from the institution in question. The selection committee may adjust the amount of the award subject to available funds and anticipated continued obligations to prior recipients. The selection committee may adjust the distribution of the award among recipients based on need and the availability of additional scholarship. To maintain the scholarship, the recipient must be a full-time student successfully pursuing a professional or graduate school education.
Application
The deadline for applications is April 1. Applications must include letters of recommendation from two faculty members of the WVU Davis College. Forms are available in the office of the director of the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences, GO38 Agricultural Sciences Building or on-line at http://dms.wvu.edu/scholarship_forms. The selection committee will interview the applicants and name the scholarship recipients by May 15. For additional information, call (304) 293-1983.
