Meter Overview

The meter is a whole current 100A credit meter, capable of measuring kWh and is available with a pulsed output. The meter is approved to IEC1036: 1996 classes 1.0 and 2.0. The meter is sealed for life by a liquid welding process and therefore does not carry an external wire seal.

A character denotes meter version after the model number:

5196A - Single rate only

5196B - Single rate with pulsed output

All meter types feature an IEC 1107 optical port used for meter reading and reprogramming. The metrology LED is incorporated into this port and pulses at a rate of 1000 impulses per kWh.

Operation

Measurement

The Meter is a 220-240Vac, 50Hz, 20/100 Amp Single Phase Credit Meter. It contains a measuring element capable of measuring active (kWh) and reactive energy (kVArh). Dependant on meter version, the meter measures and registers kWh to class 1.0 and KVArh to class 3.0. The metrology LED is incorporated into the Flag port and pulses at a rate of 1,000 impulses per kWh or kVArh for energy registration. For testing purposes this may be switched to give kVArh registration on reactive energy measuring models. All meters offer a test mode, which shows 3 decimal places and is reset when voltage is removed.

Anti-creep

Below starting current, the meter enters into an anti-creep mode. In this state the metrology LED is permanently lit and the registers do not increment. The LED remains lit until the meter current is increased in a forward direction beyond the starting current.

Meter Memory

All register and meter configuration data is recorded in an E2PROM. Registers values are stored to 2 decimal places and are updated every 5 min 20 seconds, also on power fail.

Register Displays

Single rate versions

Single rate meters display the total kWh reading only. The display is configurable to show either whole numbers, 1 or 2 decimal places. The meter is also factory configurable to display either 5 or 6 digits with roll over to zero at 99999 or 999999.

Single rate with kWh and kVArh registration

The single rate meter may be factory configured to measure both active and reactive energy. The two totals are shown on an alternating display as shown below:

Both the above registers may be configured between 0 and 2 decimal places.

Reverse Energy Detection

A configurable option within the meter will alternate a warning message on the display should a fraud attempt be made by running current backwards through the meter. The reverse energy warning message is triggered when the reverse power exceeds a threshold level. This level is factory set and requires a reverse current of 10 amps or greater to flow for a period of 16 seconds. This equates to approx 10 Wh. Once this level is reached the message below will be displayed which can only be reset via the IEC 1107 port.

Reverse Energy Register

A reverse energy register stores the value of kWh recorded by the meter in a reverse direction. The register may be configured as part of the display cycle of the meter. Alternately the register is held in memory and can be read form the meter via the IEC 1107 port. The Reverse energy register may be displayed between 0 and 2 decimal places.

Pulsed Output

The 5196B version of meter has a pulsed output, which is factory configured as follows: -

Output type: Open collector

Max. Voltage:24Vdc.

Max Power:150mW

Pulse duration:100 mS

Pulses/kWh:100

In situations where the pulses are to be collected and measured by a BMS system it is possible to reconfigure the pulse durationpulses/kWh through the IEC 1107 port. Software and Data Probes for this purpose are available from J. W. Instruments.

Meter fixing

The meter is mounted using the two fixing holes found either side of the terminal housing. To aid terminal cover sealing, the screw boss has four raised indicators that should be aligned against the indicator on the cover.

Connections

Terminal arrangement conforms to BS5685, Part1, 1979.
