SOCCER TOURNAMENT RULES

(Revised Sept 2017)

General Information

1. All players on the field at any one time may be from any elementary grade.

2. Division A: 11 players on field playing on full size soccer fields. (Minimum of 4 girls.)

3. Please provide your goalie with a different coloured jersey or marker.

4. A regular size 5 soccer ball will be used.

5. It is required that all players wear shin guards on the day of the tournament. This is a wise and relatively low cost safety measure. Soccer cleats are encouraged but not required.

6. All other rules will be called according to FIFA guidelines. Please note the following-

Offside

You are offside if: there are not two (2) players from the opposing team (i.e. goalie and one other player) between you and the opponents goal line when the ball is passed to you, except on throw-ins, goal kicks or corner kicks.

Throw-ins

1. Both feet must be touching the ground.

2. Hands must be on either side of the ball.

3. Ball must be thrown from behind the head in a smooth motion.

Substitutions may be made anytime the ball is dead (out of bounds or a goal). You must let the referee know when you want to make substitutions. You may not make substitutions without the knowledge and approval of the referee.

Handballs

1. Penalty kicks will be awarded for hand balls committed in the penalty area.

2. Intentional handballs will be called.

Inappropriate behaviour (i.e. bad language, unsportsmanlike conduct) will result in the player being sent off the field and not allowed to return. This rule also applies to coaches and other adults who are participating in the tournament.

Note: our referees are students who have an excellent knowledge of the game, and in most cases, if not all, either play on a competitive team and/or have been official referees before. They would appreciate your cooperation and encouragement.

Tie Breaking The following tie breaking procedure will be used if there is a tie at the end of the Round Robin in your pool.

1. The team that has defeated another team with which they are tied will be ranked higher.

2. The team having the best ratio of won / lost games, considering all games in the tournament.

3. The entry having the best ratio of goals for / goals against, among the tied teams.

4. The entry having the best ratio of goals for / goals against, considering all the games in the tournament.

5. If there is still a tie we will use penalty kicks to determine the higher seed.

6. In the case of a tie at the end of the round robin where goals for and goals against are used to break the tie only a +4 or a -4 will be given in any one game. This is to discourage teams from running up the score. There is no advantage gained by winning a game by more than four goals.

If there is a tie in the playoff games there will be a 5 minute sudden death overtime followed by penalty kicks if necessary (every 3rd person must be a girl). This is only necessary in the games that determine first through fourth, all other games may end in a tie.

I hope we all have a safe and fun day.
