FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK…
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our teachers and students are happy to be back at school and we are looking forward to a fantastic school year. As you know, Bonnabel’s educational values are rooted in our community’s respect for the dignity and integrity of all our students and families. We are proud to be one of the most diverse schools in Jefferson Parish. Bonnabel’s staff is committed to working collaboratively with you and with your child to provide instruction that focuses on the success and achievement of every student. We are counting on each and every parent to partner with us to continue our work to raise the bar and close the achievement gap. Our shared vision is focused on the work we do together to encourage the social, emotional, and academic growth of all our students. Nothing motivates a child more than when learning is valued by schools, families, and our community so they feel supported by all stakeholders.
We invite you to contribute your time and ideas as we continue our work together to build a positive school culture here at Bonnabel Magnet Academy.
Sincerely,
Principal Kalb

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS

The Freshmen English classes were scheduled for orientation with work at the computers navigating the library’s homepage and getting acquainted with the online resources. Also, the library has been busy with scheduled classes working on various research projects. Students were excited about the new books displayed which included the Louisiana Teen Readers’ Choice titles.
CTE …The Bonnabel Career & Technical Education Department welcomes three new faculty members this year. Ms. Jamie Holmes is teaching CNA-Certified Nursing Assistant and Medical Terminology, Mr. Raymond Richards is teaching GTE-General Technology Education and Carpentry and Ms. Donna Pharr is teaching Business Computer Applications. In the elective areas, we have new to Bonnabel, Mr. David Mitts in Gifted Art and Ms. Candy Cranch in Art. In June, the CTE Department took students to Kansas City, Missouri, where they competed at the SKILLSUSA National Championships. Competing were Denel Osburn in Screen Printing, James Vu in Medical Terminology, and Cindy Tran in Culinary Arts. These students were first place winners in their category at the state competition which allowed them to go to Nationals. Bonnabel Bruins spirit shirts (gray) will be sold this month in Room 6-123 before school or at lunch. The cost is $10.00. These shirts may be worn on Fridays in place of a uniform shirt.
ENGLISH DEPT…. On behalf of all my colleagues in the English department, I would like to thank all of the students and parents for their hard work and participation in making the 2014-2015 school years’ start such a successful one. In order to facilitate our movement forward, there are a few sundry items that need to be brought to your attention to ensure your child’s continued success in their English class.
Homework is an essential part of a child’s learning and school experience. Through homework, students are able to reinforce and strengthen concepts learned in the classroom. In addition to regular assignments, students will also be issued assignments on one or more of the following programs to facilitate instruction of the Louisiana Common Core State Standards preparation for the End of Course Tests:
* USATestPrep.com (EOC Test Prep)
* my.hrw.com (HOLT)
All USA Test Prep scores for the first nine weeks will be calculated on October 3. Please feel free to monitor your child’s /children’s activity on these computer programs for growth and development.They are excellent tools for diagnosing and improving a student’s areas of weakness. They also serve as excellent predictors of how of a student will score on their EOC testing.
The English department has taken on the task of implementing four novels into each grade level’s curricula as suggested by the Louisiana State Department of Education in the Common Core Curriculum Instructional Guide to improve our students vocabulary, reading, and reasoning skills. It is strongly recommended that you monitor your child’s reading and reinforce the importance of reading to improve the value and diversity of education.
We will be participating in the annual “Renaissance Field Trip” on November 11. The cost of the field trip is $25.00. Permission slips with payment information was sent home with your child the week of September 22, 2014.
Should you have any comments or concerns, feel free to contact your child’s teacher. Jody L. Croat, English Department Head
EXTRA-CURRICULA NEWS
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY …
The National Honor Society welcomed 17 new members in September. These new members are top performing students in the senior class. Eligibility for membership includes at least a 3.5 GPA, commitment to community service and leadership, and recommendations from their teachers. The new and old members joined together for our first fundraiser of the year. The NHS officers coordinated with local businesses to advertise for the carwash. Members tabled at various locations such as Walgreens and West Esplanade Mall and not only shared the fundraising information but collected donations as well. The carwash on Saturday was a success! Ms. LaFitte and Ms. Sallinger were not the only celebrities to stop by for a car wash. The members were visited by a BHS alum who is currently a 610 Stomper! He showed up in full uniform and took a picture with the group. Due to our gracious customers, we raised $390 for the senior stolls. If you missed our carwash on Saturday, do not worry, we are planning another carwash in the spring time.

KEY CLUB… Key Club is a program designed to help young people build character and keep them informed/engaged citizens through hands on service and leadership. Our students come from a wide range of racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds. This diversity creates a dynamic learning environment where Key Club students can actively discuss and debate, as caring and competent servant leaders, how they can transform communities worldwide. Critical to our mission is facilitating the participation for students from disadvantaged communities. Key Club’s driving force is behind helping young people have the desire to become better service providers, build their character, and develop the leadership skills to make them more active citizens.
During the month of October, Key Club will be having the following activities:
* Key Club Enrollment––The last day-to-pay dues for enrollment in the 2014-2015 school year Key Club was September 29, 2014. The cost of the dues is $40.00 which is your local and regional Kiwanis International dues, spirit shirt for Key Club, and your insurance to participate at Key Club functions. Meetings are held every Thursday in 2-212. Come join us in building a safer, happier community one person at a time.
* Park-A-Boo––An outreach program sponsored by Kiwanis North Kenner to raise funding in development of other projects (Kids Kicking Cancer, Project Eliminate, et cetera) by offering a safe environment for children to trick-or-treat and have fun. Park-A-Boo will be on October 24, 25, and 26 at Lafreniere Park.
* Penny Drive––Key Club will be having its Penny Drive for Project Eliminate (UNICEF)–a program designed to inoculate the babies against infantile Tetanus. Any contribution that can be afforded may be turned into Mr. Crout in 2-212 before school or during lunch.
Thank you for helping our participants make the positive changes in their homes, schools, and community one caring person at a time and for considering having your child participate in our prestigious program.
