Brunner to lead health plan association

St. Paul --- The Minnesota Council of Health Plans (MCHP) has named Julie Brunner as its new executive director. She takes over from Interim Executive Director Kirby Erickson in January.

As MCHP executive director, Brunner will lead the development of health care policy and community health initiatives for Minnesota’s eight nonprofit health plans.

“Julie brings to the council an infectious optimism and a can-do spirit in addressing difficult challenges,” said Marcus Merz, chair of the MCHP Board of Directors. “Her years of varied experience at both the state and local level of government, her commitment to health and human services, and her understanding of the pressures facing consumers, employers and health plans will continue moving the council forward.”

Brunner has served as deputy commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health since 1999. At MDH, she was responsible for managing the development of budget initiatives, legislative proposals and general operations.

“I'm anxious to take myyears of public service and blend them with the important mission of the council and its memberplans.Health care is an issue we all worry and care about. I lookforward to supporting the council's efforts in keeping high quality, affordable health care for all Minnesotans,” said Brunner.

Prior to her work with the MDH, Brunner served as the county administrator for St. Louis County and director of child support enforcement for the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office. In addition, her experience includes work with the Minnesota Department of Human Services and the Office of Senate Council.

Brunner’s education includes a bachelor’s and law degree from the University of Minnesota.

The Minnesota Council of Health Plans is a trade association of Minnesota’s nonprofit health plans. It is dedicated to maintaining high quality, affordable health care for Minnesotans.
