Photography Competition Entries Sought

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 14, 2009) – The UK Arts in HealthCare program is seeking entries for a "Changing Images of Aging" photo competition, designed to encourage the community to think about aging in a new way.

Contestants should submit images around the themes of frailty, social networks, spirituality, and self-expression of the elderly. Winning entries will be framed for display in the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital.

The contest is inspired by Dr. Jeffrey M. Levine’s “Aging Through a Physician’s Lens,” a photography exhibition that studies frailty, social networks, spirituality and self-expression of the elderly. Levine's work will be on display in the North Lobby of UK Chandler Hospital, 9 a.m. to 7p.m. daily, July through August. In this exhibit, Levine explores human aging from the perspective of a medical doctor who specializes in geriatrics.

Levine will also hold a grand rounds lecture to discuss the concept of humanistic medicine at 6 p.m. Aug. 25 in the President’s Room at the Singletary Center for the Arts. Registration is required. For more information call (859) 323-5261 or e-mail Carlene Hodges at .

Levine’s award winning photographs have been shown in galleries from coast to coast. A board certified internist and geriatrician, he began taking pictures of older people during his geriatric fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in the 1980’s. Levine is an attending physician at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center in Manhattan and lives in New York City.

Photo entries should be postmarked by Aug. 4 and the winner will be announced Aug. 25. To enter, include a description of your work in 100 words or less, a ready-to-frame, high-quality print (no larger than 8.5” x 11”), and a completed entry form. There are separate categories for amateur and professional photographers. For more information about the photography competition, and to obtain an entry form, contact Tina Kruger at .

UK HealthCare, UK College of Medicine, UK Graduate Center for Gerontology and the Lexington Public Library are sponsors of the contest.
