Position: ASSISTANT RESIDENT DIRECTOR, LEADERSHIP

GENERAL:

The Assistant Resident Director positions require individuals who have demonstrated maturity and ability to support and interpret Housing mission and values. This position requires interpersonal skills including listening, written and oral communication. Assistant Resident Directors must have efficient problem solving capability, administrative and organizational skills and ability to mentor and advise student staff. This position requires an understanding of needs for a diverse student population including first-year, upper-division, and family housing residents. It is preferred that Assistant Resident Directors have had prior experience in coordinating educational and social programs and managing budgets but it is not required. Assistant Resident Directors must maintain a team-oriented attitude; have leadership ability and work to establish a positive liaison with professional and student staff. All Assistant Resident Directors assist with departmental initiatives for student staff including programming, training, selection, leadership, and judicial initiatives.

The ARD, Leadership (ARD-L) reports to one full-time professional staff member and works to accomplish all goals set forth in this job description.

This position is responsible in coordinating all recruiting efforts for A-I, Lothian, and Pentland Hills RHA Councils. The ARD, Leadership serves as the primary Advisor to all residence hall RHA Councils. The ARD-L is expected to attend all meetings, trainings and programs relating to each RHA Council. The ARD-L is primarily responsible to coordinate any off-site training and development opportunities for any of the RHA Councils. This position requires constant communication and evaluation of all programs set forth by each RHA Council to the professional staff. The ARD, Leadership supports programming core values of the housing department while supporting the purpose and mission set forth in the Residence Hall Association constitution.

The ARD, Leadership may also assist the professional staff with advising the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) Executive Cabinets. The ARD-L supports the Executive Cabinets by attending and assisting with their Fall, Winter, and Spring quarter trainings. The ARD-L assists with the coordination of any off-site training and development opportunities for members of the RHA and/or NRHH Executive Cabinets.

The ARD, Leadership has the flexibility to seek out, develop and implement any new leadership initiatives that can benefit the growth and development of student leaders. This includes, but is not limited to, assisting the professional staff in coordinating attendance at local, regional, or national conferences such as NACUHR, PACUHR, or No Frills Conferences and Southern RAP for WACUHO members. The ARD, Leadership may also attend one of these conferences and serve as the group’s advisor and mentor during the conference.

The ARD, Leadership, with his or her direct supervisor, works to formulate and manage budgets for program endeavors within housing. The ARD-L will have the opportunity to attend conferences, including workshops and seminars to develop professional skills and training strategies as it relates to leadership. The ARD-L is responsible for working a minimum of twenty (20) office hours per week which includes evening commitments to advise the residence hall councils.

Overall duties include:

·  Assist the building Vice-President in recruiting efforts for each residence hall RHA Council.

·  Serve as the primary advisor to A-I, Lothian, and Pentland Hills RHA Councils.

·  Assist the professional staff with the Fall, Winter, and Spring trainings for RHA and NRHH Executive Cabinets.

·  Develop and implement leadership initiatives to promote the development of student leaders.

·  Serve as the primary advisor to student leaders attending student leadership conferences.

·  Create and maintain confidential files for student group members.

·  Provide both written and verbal constructive and developmental feedback for student leaders.

·  Assist or coordinate and plan off-site training and development for student leaders.

·  Support and participate in programs related to RHA, NRHH, and Resident Associations.

·  Participate in the residence hall duty rotation to respond to emergency and non-emergency situations. Serve as the primary back up for RA/PC staff in A-I, Lothian, and Pentland Hills. Cease and transfer duty responsibilities to professional staff member on call at midnight.

·  Support community development by initiating disciplinary and counseling processes.

·  Assist professional staff with special projects as needed.

·  Cooperate with other Housing and University staffs (facilities, dining services, support services and police).

·  Availability for emergencies, equipment needs, and other duties as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

(1)   Must be and remain a full-time, registered student with a quarter and cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 and be in good standing throughout the academic year. S/NC grades are limited. Grade history will be reviewed. Undergraduates must successfully complete 12 units per quarter. Graduate students must successfully complete a minimum of 8 units per quarter.

(2)   Required to spend several evenings and weekends in assigned area.

(3)   Must limit total class hours to 16 units (undergraduate) or 10 units (graduate) unless approved by supervisors.

(4)   Must attend Spring, Fall and Winter training sessions, all staff meetings, in-service training sessions and off-site training and developments.

(5)   Extracurricular activities on campus and other employment or office positions must be approved by direct supervisor and must not interfere with job responsibilities.

(6)   Must assist the Professional Staff with other job-related request as needed throughout the year.

(7)   Must have a working personal phone with message capability.

(8)   Must adhere to all policies and expectations as detailed in Assistant Resident Director manual.

(9)   Must successfully pass a background investigation through the Department of Justice.

(10)   Must possess a valid Driver’s License to operate a University vehicle.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

(1)  Must have related bachelor’s degree or 2-3 academic years at an accredited university or college with 2 years of residential life experience (Resident Advisor or Programming Coordinator preferred) by start of Fall Quarter.

(2)  Undergraduates: Must have a Fall quarter and cumulative GPA of a 2.75 or above and maintain that quarter and cumulative GPA throughout the Winter and Spring quarters. Grade history will be reviewed.
