Scope of the Position–Open Until Filled
Internal Laboratory Biosafety Activities
Manages and coordinates comprehensive Biosafety Program related to safety and compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g. OSHA, CDC Select Agent Program, etc). Recommends and formulates policy and operational changes based on ongoing operational research and assessment of the quality and effectiveness of OSPHL safety activities.
Analyzes policy and operational issues that cross or affect other state programs. Collaborates with stakeholders to formulate system and process enhancements to support continuous quality improvement for safety related issues.
Administers OSPHL Safety Program including developing short and long term goals to enhance the OSPHL program and safety of employees; performs root cause analysis of issues identified, develops policy and operational changes to address identified issues, implements changes and revaluates them for improvement.
Conducts comprehensive ongoing operational research and assessment to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the OSPHL Safety Plan and laboratory practices. Assures OSPHL compliance with all requirements for accreditation, certification, registration, and regulation by independent and governmental agencies.
Maintains knowledge of, analyzes, and interprets, all current national standards, guidelines, regulations and laws pertaining to OSPHL Safety compliance.
Performs and facilitates internal risk assessments of job tasks and working situations. Makes recommendations of safe work practices, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment based on risk assessment findings and knowledge of best practices. Advises section managers when dealing with situations such as implementation of testing for new agents (e.g. ebola).
Plans, writes, implements, and updates the OSPHL Safety Manual including the OSPHL Safety Plan, Bloodborne Pathogens Plan, Chemical Inventory, and Chemical Hygiene Plan, to address all biological, physical, and chemical hazards in the workplace. Writes and revises OSPHL policies and procedures as needed to implement these plans.
Advises the OSPHL Director and Section Managers on Safety requirements and approaches. Leads interdisciplinary teams to accomplish tasks and projects. Alerts the OSPHL Director and Section Managers to potential safety problems and suggests preventive measures and solutions.
