The Apprenticeship Programme
An Apprenticeship with Wakefield Council is a structured training programme with pay and not a job in the traditional sense. Apprenticeships combine formal learning and on-the-job learning with a view to gaining nationally recognised qualifications and start a career path.
Apprentices are expected to show commitment and dedicationwhile learning from their work-based mentors and college tutors (where applicable).
Key learning areas forthis Apprenticeship -
Under the supervision of a competent person, you will learn how to:
- Undertake project work specific to the department’s requirements.
- Manage risk - including identifying and prioritising threats and opportunities, mitigating and minimising impacts and optimising benefits
- Write business cases, objectives, delivery, lessons learnt, project plans, reviews and scope and scheduling
- Contract manage and procurement - including nature of contracts, procurement processes and legal and ethical principles
- Support staff with activities through the various sections of the department.
- Support staff by carrying out photocopying duties, assist with the processing of invoices and charges related to the service area.
- Help others in dealing with enquiries from customers (on the telephone and face to face).
- Support staff by dealing with incoming and outgoing post.
- Assist with data input using electronic systems.
- Produce routine basic information in response to a request.
Qualifications, experience and knowledge
When applying for this Apprenticeship, on the application form and at interview (also at a practical test if applicable)you:
Must be able to demonstrate:
- An interest in project management and working in an administrativeenvironment.
- Some understanding of a Project Officer role.
- Some idea of the work of local government.
- 2 x A’ levels at grade C or above.
- 4 x A*- CGCSEs (or new grading 9-4) or equivalent including English Language and maths.
Ideally will be able to demonstrate:
- A good understanding of the work and skills needed by a Project Officer.
- A good understanding of local government work.
- An awareness of Health and Safety practices such as safe working.
- Part time or voluntary work experience.
- A qualification in an ICT subject, GCSE or equivalent.
Learning areas for All Apprenticeships –
Under the supervision of a competent person, you will learn how to:
- Treat customers with respect and aim to provide the most effective service possible.
- Establish who key customers are and assist in meeting their needs.
- Understand the purpose of a role and understand how roles fit together within the organisation
- Support and work with others, inside the Council and from other organisations.
- Work within recognised safe systems of work and in accordance with all health and safety legislation at all times.
- Apply and understand policies, practices, legislation and codes of practice that govern how the work area operates and the need to comply with standards of behaviour outlined in relevant legislation and guidance
- Implement and promote good practice in relation to equality issues.
You will have regular contact with many other people in order to develop skills including: Colleagues, citizens and other employees of the Council and other organisations.
