CONGRATULATIONS
We have much to celebrate with a number of awesome results in sporting, academic and cultural areas. We have some very talented students and some very committed and hard working staff.
Highlands Intermediate Sports Exchange
Last Thursday 200 of our students travelled by bus to Highlands Intermediate in New Plymouth to compete in a variety of sporting codes. These ranged from rugby to debating and mountainbiking to chess and provided many opportunities for students to represent our school in a competitive situation. Our teams performed very well and we won the day by accumulating the highest number of points overall.
Thank you to parents/coaches that assisted on the day. We also appreciate the effort involved in getting students to school early for the 7.30 am departure.
Mathex
On Tuesday 29 August 120 teams of four pupils took part in the annual Mathex competition in the Whanganui Intermediate School hall. Children from Year 5 to 8 participated against other schools in four separate contests. Each team had up to 30 minutes to answer 20 maths questions, one at a time. The first three sections used the entire 30 minutes and it was only in the Year 8 competition that the clock was stopped when the winning team (Whanganui Intermediate 1) answered all twenty questions in 27 minutes 18 seconds. As always a great crowd of parents and friends supported the young mathematicians.
Results are:
Year 7
1st 19 correct - Whanganui Intermediate 3 (Eliza Maxey, Hannah Palmer, Glen Mallett, Antonia Harding)
2nd= 17 correct - Whanganui Intermediate 1 (Levi Hoekstra, Sophia Bedwell, Philip Dale, Jurek Sosnowski)
3rd Whanganui - Intermediate 2 (Ratunui Latus, Matt Leith, Charlotte Stent, Nikki Forlong)
Year 8
1st - 20 correct in a time of 27 minutes 18 seconds.
Whanganui Intermediate 1 (Calum Sinclair, Firooze Colaabavala, Amy Bennetts, Georgina Ross)
WIS 8A Netball
WIS 8A Netball team had a great end to their season by winning the Secondary School 2nd Grade last Saturday. This was a great achievement and the first time any Year 7 or 8 team has been invited to play in the secondary school grades on a Saturday afternoon. Well done girls. Pictured are the team with their Coach Mrs Robyn Simes.

Whanganui District Youth Committee Arts Competition
The Whanganui District Youth Committee held an art exhibition in the last week of August where young Whanganui artists from the age of 12 to 24 could compete. We wish to congratulate Xanthe Cohen Yr 8 who won “Best Write Up” under 15 years. The topic for the competition was “The future is in our hands”.
PB4L REWARD - IN SCHOOL DISCO
On Friday 25 August students were treated to an “in school disco” that was held in our school hall during our mid-morning and afternoon sessions. This was a reward for achieving 35,000 green cards as part of our “Positive Behaviour for Learning” behavior management programme. We regularly seek feedback from our students on practical and cost effective ways we can celebrate achievement of targets and this was something many had identified. There was a morning and afternoon session and students had a great time.
Our thanks go to James Roy and Terry Tubmann who came to help on the day and to DJ Sam-a-Lamb who did an awesome job providing great sounds and keeping the energy and enjoyment levels bubbling.
WANTED!
We are needing two costume items for the school production please. One is a red beret and the other a furry scarf. If you are able to loan us either of these items we would be very grateful. They could either be sent to Mrs Duncum in Room 28 or left at the school office.

SCHOOL DONATIONS
Once again, a big thank you to those who have already paid their school donations this year. Statements were sent out at the end of last term. A reminder you can pay online into the school bank account at Westpac 03 0791 0503615 00. Please enter student’s name and “school donation”. We try to keep these as low as possible and the $75.00 has not increased for a number of years.
