Safety and Warning Signs
CLB Level: Ph2Essential Skills Focus: DocumentUse (read signs, entering information), working with others (team work)
Task: Understand safety and warning signs
Purpose: Students will
- understand waning/safety signs
- understand the importance of signs in the workplace
Learning Style: Visual, auditory, kinaesthetic
Time: 2 - 3 lessons / Method:
- Get students to look at some signs they might be familiar with, such as no smoking or no food or drink ones. Check if they know what they mean. Introduce the term “warning sign.” Talk to students about the importance of signs and what they are for. Ask about signs in their countries and if they have signs in the workplace. Mention how important it is to understand signs in Canadian workplaces for safety reasons.
- Students work on Activity A (attached).Have them work on the signs orally first as a whole group. Then in pairs, they point to a sign and say its meaning. Then get them to write the warnings under the signs.
- Activity B – Students make signs. In groups they cut the signs and the warnings and match the sign with the appropriate warning. Use the pictures and words in appendix A (attached).
- Activity C – Game 1: Students play a memory game with the symbols and warnings. They have to match a sign to the corresponding warning. The student who gets the most pairs is the winner. Use the signs and warnings from appendix A and glue them onto construction paper. Make a few sets depending on number of students so that you can have different groups (3 to 4 students) playing at the same time.
- Activity D - Game 2: Board Game (appendix B). Students can play in pairs. They will each take turns and toss a coin. Head moves one, tail moves two. When they land on a sign they have to remember what it means. If they can’t remember they go back. When they land on the “meaning” they have to point to the corresponding sign. If they can’t remember they go back.
- Activity E: Assessment
see in the workplace such as the WHMIS symbols or signs
that they might see in the community. Use the steps
suggested above to introduce and practice the signs.
Debrief/Transfer: With some support, students talk about
the signs they learned and the importance of understanding
signs in different contexts. On the board, list different
places in the community where students might see a sign. Also,
include places where signs might not be common. Ask the
students to come to the board and check the places they
think they will likely see a sign. Talk about the importance of
understanding signs in the workplace and in the community.
