McCarthyism and the “Red Scare”

·  Republican Senator from Wisconsin who, in 1950, claimed he had a list of 205 communists working in the State Department.

·  Led the House Committee on Un-American Activities or HUAC (or, rarely, HCUA) (1945-1975). It was an investigating committee of the United States House of Representatives. It is often referred to as the House Un-American Activities Committee.

·  Under heavy suspicion were the artists, writers, and university professors.

·  McCarthy's intimidation spanned several years; however, by 1954, the Senate voted 67-22 to condemn McCarthy.
