Post/Job Title: Peer Assisted Learning Leader
Grade: 1
Normal hours per week: 2-3 (this includes running and preparing your PAL sessions, attending follow-up training and meeting with PAL academic and support staff)
(Some flexibility will be required in order to ensure that key time scales and deadlines are met).
Recognition: Academic credit and monetary remuneration
Duration: September 2011 to May 2012 (may vary depending on the Faculty)
Accountable to: PAL Coordination Team
Responsible to: Makis Malliris – PAL Director
Fiorella Bettin – PAL Coordinator
Job Purpose
To organise, publicise and facilitate weekly study support sessions for groups of first or second year students in order to help them:
· adjust quickly to university life
· improve their study habits
· enhance their understanding of the subject matter of their course, or a course unit, through group discussion
Special Conditions – Applicants must:
· be a current Student of the University of the West of England;
· have had competent performance on the 1st year of the study programme
· have empathy with the 1st year experience
· have good communication, listening and interpersonal skills,
· possess qualities such as credibility, commitment, honesty and approachability

Continuous supervision and support by the designated PAL Officer and PAL Director.

Main Duties & Responsibilities
1. Offer weekly PAL sessions from September to May
2. Facilitate group discussions in these PAL sessions using interactive learning strategies and techniques rather than lecturing or completing students' coursework for them
3. Discourage students from attending PAL as a substitute for classes
4. Demonstrate good study habits and learning strategies to students attending PAL sessions
5. Attend the initial PAL Leader Training and Follow-up training
6. Maintain contact with the PAL Coordinator and your PAL Academic
7. Send copies of the weekly attendance registers to the PAL Coordinator at the end of each week
8. Gather student evaluation information as required from time to time
9. Complete session plans and self-reflection forms on a weekly basis
10. Maintain a professional attitude on issues such as confidentiality, marks, standards and student complaints
