Food Safety & Standards Authority is the regulatory authority established under the Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006 for laying down safety and quality standards in the food sector and monitoring implementation of those standards. The Authority has been established under Section 4 of the Act. The Chairperson has been appointed and has taken over. The Chief Executive Officer of the Authority has also been appointed. The Authority is now engaged in drafting Rules and Regulations for the operation of the Authority and its various Committees and Council. As soon as the drafts are available, these are proposed to be put on the website of the Authority for public consultation. Based on the inputs received, these will be further modified before submission to the Authority and the Government.

The Authority has already published a notice inviting Expression of Interest for nominations from scientists desirous of becoming members of its Scientific Panels and Committee. Interested individuals are encouraged to send their bio data before 30th September, 2008. (Please see proforma)

Notification under Section 90 of the Act has been issued on 28th of August, 2008 under which the staff working under the various Acts, which are given below are now deemed to be working under the Authority under the same terms and conditions. The Authority proposes to shortly carry out a detailed review of these Acts and Rules.

The Authority will be shortly advertising the availability of vacancies at various positions. The tenure with the Authority offers one of the most challenging, innovative and creative assignments available to scientists, food professionals with administrators to be at the cutting edge of building a world class regulatory structure that is science based, pro-active and responsive to be needs of the twenty-first century.
