Text: PHYSICS by Alan Giambattiste, Betty Richardson, and Robert Richardson. First Edition. McGraw Hill.

Course Description: This is a three-credit course. It is a continuation of General

Physics I (PHY2130) to study electricity, magnetism, and modern physics. The Lab (PHY2141) carries an extra one credit point. When taking concurrently with the PHY2140, PHY2141 satisfies the General Education Laboratory Requirement.

Lectures and Reading Assignments: Assigned reading must be completed before

lectures. Lectured materials must be reviewed and all question(s) (if any) must be cleared before the start of the next lecture.

Homework: The purpose of the homework is to probe your understanding of the

concepts discussed in the lectures. Homework should be done with the textbook closed. If you have difficulty with a particular problem, you should go back to review that part of the lecture or discussion in the text before you bring it up in the quiz section. It is extremely important to do your homework timely. Because of the fast pace of the course it is almost impossible to recover once falling behind.

Quiz: The quiz section meets once a week in small groups. It gives you a chance to ask questions regarding lectures and questions you may have when reading textbook, to discuss homework problems, and to interact with fellow classmates. During the semester, a total of SIX unannounced quiz tests will be given. The scores of the best five will constitute up to10% of the total credits towards your course grade. No makeup quiz tests will be given.

Grade: Your course grade will be based on the total credits you have accumulated: First midterm exam = 17.5%.

Second midterm exam =17.5%.

Third midterm exam =17.5%.

Final exam = 35%. Th. April 24, 1:20 – 3:50 pm.

Quizzes = 12.5%

There will be no makeup exams. Missing ONE of the midterm exam is permitted without penalty if there is legitimate excuses. The credits allotted to the missed exam will be proportionally redistributed over the remaining exams. Any further midterm exam missed will be automatically assigned a zero score.

Grading Table

A = 85 -100% B+ = 75 -80% C+ = 60 -65% D+ = 45 -50%

A-= 80 - 85% B = 70 - 75% C = 55 - 60% D = 40 - 45%

B- = 65 - 70% C- = 50 - 55% D- = 35 – 40%

Available Resources:

i)Office hours – lecturer and lab instructors have regular office hours.

ii)Physics resource center – The center is located in room 172 of the Physics Research Building. The scheduled time will be announced later, or can be found out from the physics main office. Here you will be able to get assistance with tour homework, lab work, and other issues related to this course.

iii)Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction (SI) – Available at the Academic Success Center (ASC) in room 1600 of the Undergraduate Library. Ms. Farah Akhdar is the SI leader appointed by the ASC.

LABORATORY: The laboratory (PHY2140) is a separate one-credit course that must

be taken concurrently with the lecture (PHY2140). Your lab manual can be purchased from the University Bookstore. The lab schedule is arranged by Dr. Scott Payson who can be reached at 313- 577-3280 for any of your questions regarding the lab arrangement of this course.
