Were the Barbarians a Negative or Positive Factor in Ancient and Medieval History?

History is written by the victors” – This historic aphorism is the bane of the modern historian. To it I might add what I consider to be another historical aphorism “History is written by the literate.”

Consider these two statements. Why are the losers of war always chided and derided by history. How might history be different if they had won or equal space was devoted to their voice? The same can be said of illiterate societies. We rarely hear their voice but instead usually rely on what remains in the historical record, often written by their enemies.

The provocative question titling this page and controversial research behind it is challenging the minds of modern historians. Considering nomadic peoples such as the Xiongnu, Huns, Uighurs, Vikings, Magyars and most recently in our course the Mongols, you will analyze and evaluate the impact of nomadic peoples on world history. In addition to readings you have been assigned recently and throughout this course, you will need to thoroughly read the following:

·  Chapter 17 in your textbook. Complete your outline.

·  in the Reilly Reader:

  1. Historical Context: Mongol Eurasia 1200-1350 C.E. – p. 386
  2. Thinking Historically: Making Moral Judgments about History – p.387
  3. Selection #72 by Gregory Guzman - Were the Barbarians a Negative or Positive Factor in Ancient and Medieval History? P. 388 – 395

While other controversial works such as Jack Wetherford’s “The Making of Genghis Khan” has largely supported Guzman’s argument you need to consider the whole picture.

Research the Mongols and at least one other Nomadic group. Use the attached readings, your textbook, and/or internet research build your background knowledge. Independently analyze the history yourself. Support your conclusion with evidence.

Assignment:

Compose a:

·  2-3 page, double-spaced

·  Times New Roman font size 12

·  Proper essay structure and grammar

evaluate the question above (Were the Barbarians a Negative or Positive Factor in Ancient and Medieval History?). While you should draw on previous readings, independent research, and good historical judgment – the basis of your argument should be addressing the Guzman reading.
