Notice of Annual Board Meeting

June 15, 2009 12:30 pm Bridges Conference Room

(inside the hospital cafeteria Lunch Room on the 8th Floor of the Hospital)

The Annual Meeting of the Hope Chest News Board of Directors will be held on the date, time and place above for the purpose of electing new Directors to the Board. The terms of the following current Directors expire this year.

Ed Aubitz

Kathy Greising

Ralph Loftus (completed the term of Ross Bourgeois who passed away in 2008

Eileen Vierow (has indicated not to run)

If you would like to be considered for a director’s position on the board, please contact any of the current board members. Anyone wishing to become a member of the Board should attend this meeting. Immediately following this meeting will be a regular Board meeting at which time officers (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer) will be elected.

It is desired that all board members be able to participate in a minimum of 9 of the 12 monthly meetings (with the exception of absences due to illness). It is very difficult to conduct business if we do not have a quorum present. Meetings are currently held the 3rd Monday of each month at 12:30 pm in the Bridges Conference Room.

Realizing that people may not be able to be present at some Board meetings, a new procedure has been implemented to use teleconferencing for the meeting. Board members can be out of town or stay at home and still participate.

If you are not interested in being on the Board, you are welcome to attend this or any other board meeting or volunteer in some capacity. We always need help. Volunteers are critical to keep our organization moving forward.

President’s Review

With spring just around the corner hopefully all our heart and lung buddies have escaped the winter without any difficult health problems. Unfortunately some of our HCN patients have passed away this year. As we expected, there has been an increase in the number of requests for assistance Marget is receiving. The uncertainty in the economy is having an effect on many of us.

Fortunately, we have had fundraiser volunteers step up and helped out our cause. Mary Paquette has organized a couple of bake sales and had surprisingly good results. Mary intends on having additional sales throughout the year so look for additional emails about when they are and how you can help. Harriette Wock also organized another Herbergers coupon book sale this winter. She put in a great deal of effort which is very much appreciated.

Hal Wenaas is planning on having a Pancake Breakfast this spring in Litchfield on April 19th at the Litchfield Eagles Club - 3424 S. CSAH 34, Litchfield, MN from 8:30 -12:30 o’clock. This will be the 3rd breakfast Hal has organized for Hope Chest News. Mark your calendars and be sure and attend. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Ed Aubitz is again overseeing our two annual golf tournaments. The Larry Daml Tournament will be held June 29th at the Refuge golf course in Oak Grove and the Marie Anderson Tournament will be on July 27th at Columbia Golf Course in Minneapolis. Flyers and registration forms for both events are elsewhere in this Newsletter

There is also a strong rumor that there will be a waffle fundraiser for Hope Chest News in a metro south area sometime this year.

The Hope Chest News Annual Board Meeting will be held on June 15th 2009. At this meeting elections are held to replace Board Members whose terms have expired. Terms of service are 3 years. HCN needs new members with ideas and the a desire to contribute. Please considering putting your name in nomination.

Personally, I would like to thank all of the organizers, sellers, bakers and helpers that make all of these events a success. For those that haven’t been involved yet please consider joining us!

Kip

Treasurer’s Report

Hello All,

Frank and I are back in Minnesota and were hoping the weather would have been a little nicer for our return. Good News is that this cold won’t last much longer. While Frank and I spent the winter in California enjoying our grandchildren and spending some quality time with them, I also have been busy with Hope Chest News.

I took our organization from doing the accounting on my personal Microsoft Money program designed for home accounting to Quickbooks Accounting for Non-Profits. I have spent time researching it and trying to learn as much as I can about it. Starting January 1 2009 we crossed over to Quickbooks. This program is business software and designed for non-profits use. I am sure future accountants will be happy with us for making the switch.

Since January we have been fairly busy with both fundraising and with helping our fellow lung and heart patients with support.

1.  Harriette Wock ,lead us in another Herberger fundraiser. Raising $510.00 with the help of others from the board..

2.  Mary Paquette and her crew have been busy with first a bake sale in February raising $436.00 for Valentines Day and again in March raising $254.00 for the Lucky Irish. Mary and her crew can always use more baked goods for their sales. She is planning one for around Holidays and events at the U of M. in the future. If you would like to donate bake goods to help them out call Mary at 651-963-9767 to find out the date for the next sale.

3.  We also have had many requests for funds. So far this year we have paid out slightly over $6,000 to help 6 families with financial assistance and have given 2 baskets to families who have lost a loved one. The recession doesn’t help those needing drugs and housing when jobs are scarce and you are experiencing medical emergencies.

We at Hope Chest News realize that times are hard for everyone but ask you if you are going to donate to a charity that you think about Hope Chest News. If you or a loved one has a talent that might help us raise funds we are interested in speaking to you. If you work for a company that might donate funds or items for the silent auction or prizes for the golfers at our Golf Scrambles that will be coming up in June and July let us know.

We wish you a Very Blessed Easter and an early spring warm up.

Judy Vermeulen

Treasurer

Fund raising activity for the year

In the first three months of 2009 the following fund raising events were held:

Mary Paquette followed up on her recommendation to the Board of Directors to hold a Bake Sale with the proceeds going to Hope Chest News. With excellent participation by HCN patients and friends she actually held two sales one on February 8th and a second on March 16th. Almost $700 was raised between the two sales. Mary plans on holding another sale on May 11th. If you’d like to help with that one please contact Mary at or 651-450-9767

Harriette Wock headed another fund raising effort by selling Herberger’s Coupon Books. The books were available for $5.00 with all the proceeds going to Hope Chest News. Coupons in the books were good for $10.00 off merchandise. Based on the results of sales a time was allocated to each organization to be in the store for the special February 28, 2009 Sale Date to have one more chance to sell books. The final total was over $500 for HCN.
