State Schools Superintendent to address Common Core

EDUCATOR, TV SHOW PERSONALITY TO KEYNOTE IBE EDUCATION CONFERENCE

The concept of lifetime learning applies to teachers at least as much as students. Hundreds of school administrators and instructors will gather in Indianapolis for the 6th annual Education Conference of Indiana Black Expo, Inc. to discover ways they can be more effect when they return to the classrooms next fall.

The Indiana Civil Rights Commission and Cummins, Inc. will present the education conference Thursday, July 18th at the Indiana Convention Center as part of the Indiana Black Expo, Inc. 43rd Annual Summer Celebration. IBE President and CEO Tanya Bell said, “Our main objective is to bring together experts and practitioners who can help Hoosier educators resolve or at least effectively address their most daunting professional challenges.”

Registration is $25 in advance and $50 the day of the event.

In an effort to address tough economic times faced by school districts. Toward that end, Bell announced that school districts with at least 10 paid registrants will receive an equal number of complimentary slots. Those with 25 or more will not only receive the match but will be recognized on stage as Education Partners with IBE.

Dr. Marvin Thompson, the principal featured on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) mini-series, “Blackboard Wars,” will keynote the educator’s summit. His impressive career includes the classroom, building leadership as principal and serving as superintendent in a district that experienced measurable student gains during his tenure.

Bell said, “We are excited to have Dr. Thompson share his extensive experience and "systems thinking" approach on how he increases both student achievement and teacher effectiveness through educational training and support to schools through his quality management systems. We look forward to having Dr. Thompson share his strategies, experiences, and philosophies with Indiana school administrators and educators, policy makers, and community leaders.”

Glenda Ritz, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, will be a key participant at the Education Conference. Among other things, she will address the much-discussed national Common Core standards considered for implementation in Indiana schools.

Educators will be further enlightened by the primary presenter, Dr. Norma LeMoine. Who is Chief Educational Officer (CEO) and sole proprietor of LeMoine and Associates Educational Consulting, a company dedicated to assuring excellence in education for traditionally underperforming students including Standard English Learner (SEL) populations.

Dr. LeMoine’s career in education spans 35 years. She is a nationally recognized expert on issues of language, literacy acquisition and learning in African American and other Standard English Learner (SEL) populations. She has written and spoken extensively on the topic and is a highly sought-after consultant to colleges, universities, and school districts nationwide

Bell is confident that participating educators will discover best practices for higher test scores, more effective classroom discipline, proven strategies to better engage students and various ways in which to heighten parent involvement.
