The February Revolution: 1917
This was the revolution that ended the Czar’s (Nicholas II) rein in Russia. The Czar was replaced by a provisional government that which was an alliance between the liberals and the socialists.
Civil War between Reds and the Whites: 1917
This civil war in Russia was fought between the Red army (Bolsheviks) and the White Army (Mensheviks). The Reds wanted a revolution to communism, and their prominent leaders were Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky. The Whites were a loosely-allied group against the Reds. The Reds ended up winning the war and taking power in Russia.
Stalin’s 5-year Plan: 1929
This was the name of Stalin’s plan for the Soviet Union to catch up to the rest of the world and modernize his country. Stalin actually had many five year plans, and the goal of all of them would be to increase production. For instance he created an army of farmers who got farming work done together ten times as fast. He scared his people saying they needing to increase production to prepare themselves from the ‘imminent’ attack from the west. Everyone had to work.
Stalin’s Purges: 1936
Also called the “Great Purge”, this is when Joseph Stalin becomes aware of people openly criticizing him, even people in his own political party. So he ordered the tens of millions of ordinary individuals executed, assassinated, and banishment to labor camps to ‘all who opposed his rule’. There was a lot of people victim to his “purge”.
Russia and Germany World War II pact: 1939
Right before Germany was going to attack the Soviet Union in WW2 Hitler decided to offer a non-aggression pact between Germany and Russia, and in Stalin’s circumstance he had no other option than to sign. But Stalin didn’t trust Hitler so he secretly prepared his army to fight. When Hitler found out he attacked the Soviet Union and broke the treaty in June 1941.
Tehran Conference: 1943
This conference was a meeting for the prominent Allied powers leaders such as President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and also Joseph Stalin. They made deals and arrangements involving war and planned for D-day. Also they made plans for dealing with Japan.
