Atlanta Basic Skills Competition

General Information

Eligibility Requirements:

The competition is open to all skaters who are currently registered in a Skate With Us Basic Skills program. Skaters who are not actively involved with group lessons but take private lessons may also enter events. All skaters have the option to enter events based on the level they have passed or the current level they are working on, but not both levels. Skaters will be broken into groups of approximately six (6) skaters. Adults may register for any of the Basic or Freeskate events and will be grouped in an adult category if numbers allow. Skaters who have passed any US Figure Skating tests higher than the Preliminary Moves in the Field and Freestyle are ineligible for this competition.

Entries and Fees:

All entries must be postmarked no later than midnight, August 15, 2007. Late entries will be accepted only if space permits, at the discretion of the competition director. Late entry fees will be $40.00 per event. Entry fees are per person. No family discounts will be offered. The first event is $30.00 and each additional event is $10.00. No refunds after the deadline unless the competition is canceled by IceForum. Entry forms must be filled out completely and returned with payment.

Awards:

All events will be final rounds. Medals will be awarded to first, second, and third places. All other places will receive ribbons or certificates. There will be an Artistic Trophy Awarded to one skater per level who achieves the highest artistic mark. Artistic Award will be based on artistic mark from the program with music event only. All awards will be posted and/or announced throughout the competition.

Schedule of Events:

Schedule of events will be posted at least 1 week prior to the competition and e-mailed to you. Questions should be directed to the Skating School coordinators. The competition is tentatively planned to run from 10:00am-7:00pm

Music:

The music for each event must be provided on a CD or cassette tape by the skater. The coach or parent accompanying the skater during the event should keep back up copies of music. CD’s and tapes should be clearly marked with the name of the skater, age, event entered and length of music. Competition copies should be turned in at the time of registration, at least one hour before the event time. All tapes must be rewound.

Video Taping:

There will be a professional videographer at this competition. Only battery operated video cameras will be permitted. Parents will not be allowed to stand in the doorway or hockey boxes to video.

Guidelines

·  Skaters at all levels may choose to enter an event based on their current class level or they may choose to enter an event at the last level they have passed.

·  Skaters do not have to have a private instructor to enter events however, Skating school coordinators must sign applications to insure all information is correct and events entered are appropriate.

·  Skaters must adhere to the required elements for each event. Elements included from a higher level will result in a deduction.

·  No Axels are permitted.

Competitors should plan to arrive one hour before their first event

·  Required elements must be skated in the order listed.

·  Deductions will be taken for elements from a higher level.

Snowplow Sam-Tots

·  March followed by a 2 foot glide

·  Forward2 foot swizzles, 2-3 in a row

·  Forward snowplow stop

·  Backward wiggles, 2-6 in a row

Basic 1:

·  Forward 2 foot glide

·  Forward 2 foot swizzles, 6-8 in a row

·  2 foot turn in place

·  Forward snowplow stop

·  Rocking Horse (2-3)

Basic 2:

·  Forward 1 foot glide-either foot

·  Backward 2 foot swizzles, 6-8 in a row

·  2 foot turn in place- forward to backward

·  Moving snowplow stop

·  Forward alternating swizzle pumps- straight line

Basic 3:

·  Forward stroking

·  Forward ½ swizzle pumps on a circle, either direction, 6-8 in a row

·  Moving forward to backward 2 foot turn, either direction

·  Backward 1 foot glide, either foot

·  2 foot spin

Basic 4

·  Forward outside edge on a circle,

·  Forward crossovers, 6 - 8 consecutive, both directions

·  Forward outside 3-turn, right and left free foot position

·  Backward stroking

·  Backward snowplow stop, right or left

Basic 5:

·  Backward outside edge on a circle, clockwise or counter clockwise

·  Backward crossovers, 6-8 consecutive, both directions

·  1 foot spin, minimum of 3 revolutions

·  Hockey stop.

·  Side toe hop, either direction.

Basic 6:

·  Forward inside 3-turn, right & left

·  T-stop, right or left

·  Bunny Hop

·  Forward arabesque spiral on a straight line, right or left

·  Lunge, right or left

Basic 7:

·  Moving forward inside open Mohawk, right to left & left to right

·  Ballet jump, either direction

·  Backward crossover to a back outside edge landing position, both directions

·  Forward inside pivot

Basic 8:

·  Moving forward outside or inside 2-turns, Right & left.

·  Waltz Jump

·  Mazurka, either direction

·  Combination Move- either direction (basic 8 curriculum)

·  Beginning 1 foot upright spin, optional free foot position.

COMPULSORY PROGRAMS-NO MUSIC

US FIGURE SKATING FREESKATE 1-6, BEGINNER (No test), PRE-PRELIMINARY

·  The skater must demonstrate the required elements and may use any additional elements from previous levels.

·  The skating order of the required elements is optional.

·  Skater will only use ½ of the ice using a limited number of connecting steps.

·  Program must not exceed 1 minute.

·  Deductions will be taken if elements from a higher level are performed.

·  Freeskate 1-6 skaters may skate at the highest level passed or one level higher (but not both levels in the same event) and may have passed pre-preliminary moves in the field test.

Freeskate 1:

·  Advanced forward stroking, 4-6 consecutive strokes

·  Basic forward outside and forward inside edges, 2-4 of each.

·  Scratch spin from backward crossovers.

·  Waltz jump from backward crossovers

·  Half flip jump.

Freeskate 2:

·  Forward outside spiral right or left, forward inside spiral right or left.

·  Waltz three’s, right or left.

·  Beginning back spin, entry optional

·  Waltz jump, side toe hop, waltz jump

·  Toe Loop

Freeskate 3:

·  Forward crossovers in a figure 8

·  Advanced forward outside swing rolls, 4-6 consecutive

·  Back spin

·  Salchow jump

·  Waltz jump/toe loop or salchow toe loop

Freeskate 4:

·  Sprial sequence: FI spiral, FI Mohawk, BO Sprial clockwise or counterclockwise

·  Forward power 3’s, 2-3 consecutive sets, right or left.

·  Sit spin

·  Loop Jump

·  Walt jump/loop jump

Freeskate 5:

·  Spiral sequence: FO spiral, forward outside 3 turn, 1 backward crossover, backward inside spiral

·  Camel spin

·  Forward upright spin to a backward upright spin

·  Loop/loop

·  Flip Jump

Freeskate 6:

·  Five step Mohawk sequence- 1 set alternating pattern

·  Camel, sit spin combination, minimum of 4 revsolutions

·  Split or stag jump

·  Waltz jump/1/2 loop/salchow jump combo

·  Lutz jump

Beginner (no test): May not have passed any official US Figure Skating free skating tests.

·  Waltz jump

·  Salchow

·  ½ flip or ½ half lutz

·  Upright scratch spin, minimum 3 revolutions

Basic Programs with Music

·  Program duration 1:00 +/- 10 seconds, to be skated on a full ice surface.

·  Vocal music is permitted

·  Elements are not restricted as to the number of times element is executed, or length of glides, number of revolutions, etc., unless otherwise stated.

·  Skater may use elements from a previous level. Deductions will be taken is elements from a higher level are performed.

·  Skaters will be judged on technical merit and presentation.

Basic 5 & 6:

·  Backward crossovers- minimum of 5 consecutive, either direction

·  1 foot spin

Basic 7 & 8:

·  Beginning 1 foot spin, optional free foot position

·  Combination Move: either direction- 2 forward crossovers into a forward inside Mohawk, cross behind, back crossover, step forward onto a forward inside edge.

Limited Beginner Freeskate Program

May not have passed any official USFSA test higher than Basic skills badge levels. A well balanced program consisting of half revolution jumps, salchows and toeloops. Two foot and one foot upright spins are allowed.

Beginner/No Test Program

May not have passed any official USFS test higher than Basic Skills badge levels. A well balanced program consisting of half and full rotation jumps, spins and combination spins. NO AXELS OR FLYING SPINS ALLOWED.

INTERPRETIVE

Open to all levels

Music will be selected by the competition committee and will not be announced in advance. Music will be played twice for the competitors during

the warm-up. No costumes or props will be allowed. Girls and boys will be grouped together, and levels may be combined. Skaters may enter

only one level, either at their current skating level or one level higher. COACHING IS NOT PERMITTED DURING THIS EVENT.

Skaters will be judged on originality, musical and artistic expression, and ice coverage. Technical elements will be judged on their appropriateness to the

music.

SHOWCASE

Open to all levels

·  Programs will be 1:30 or less.

·  Categories will be determined by age & level.

·  Theme of skater’s choice.

·  Vocal music is permitted.

·  Judging to emphasize interpretation of music rather than technical skills.

·  Costumes should compliment music.

·  Hand props are allowed but must NOT touch the ice.

I also understand that the skater may not have passed any U.S. Figure Skating tests at the time of competition, except Beginner (No Test), Freeskate 1 - 6, and Limited Beginner competitors as specified in the Requirements.
