Hidden Valley Scout Reservation

Camp Countdown 2009

Please take a moment to review the following points in preparation for this summer’s Troop camping adventure to HiddenValley:

1)Clothing and Equipment

a)Gear List (please see accompanying sheet)

b)Trunks preferred – a padlocked trunk is the preferred luggage for camp. Make sure that you provide two identical keys – one for the CampScoutmaster and one for the boy.

c)Uniforms –either wear your Class A uniform to campor have it neatly folded and readily available for pictures. This uniform must be quickly accessible on Sunday. It should not be locked in your trunk.

d)A bathing suit and towel must be on top of your trunk. One of the first things we will do upon arrival at camp is to go to the lake for each person’s swimming classification test.

e)Rain Gear is essential. Also, bring one or more plastic bags for dirty and/or wet clothing and a pair of “scruffy” sneakers if possible.

f)Please put your tooth brush, tooth paste, soap and deodorant in a ziplock bag, marked with your name.

g)If you are taking the Woodcarving merit badge, you should bring your own knife (2-1/2” blade or less).

You must have a Totin’ Chip or Whittling Chip with you in order to use your knife.

2)Medications

a)All prescription medications must be in their original container (with the doctor’s name, patient’s name, administration instructions and date on the label). All medications will be turned in to the CampNurse. You also need to complete and turn in the Medical Administration Record to a troop staff member.

3)Troop Pictures

a)The cost for an 8x10 Troop picture is $9.00. Please turn in cash (or check made out to Troop 38) before or upon arrival at Camp. No unpaid requests for photos will be accommodated.

4)Spending Money

a)Use your best judgement – a Scout should not need more than $15.00 or so for the week.

b)Money should be placed in a marked envelope with your son’s name on it (small bills only please)

c)Individuals taking leatherworking, woodcarving or shotgun shooting merit badges will need additional funds ($10-$15 for leatherworking or woodcarving, $20.00 for shotgun (50 shots) & $10.00 per 25 additional shots)

5)Telephone

a)The camp telephone number for incoming calls is (603)364-2900. This is for business or emergency use.

6)Mail

a)Letters mailed to Scouts at camp should be addressed to: <Scout’s Name>, Troop #38 Week #5, Hidden Valley Scout Camp - GSR, 2A Eileen Shore Road, Gilmanton Iron Works, NH 03837.

7)Departure and Arrival

a)Sunday Departure and CampArrival (July 26)

i)Leave from the Kmart parking lot (for those going together) at 10:30am SHARP!

ii)Stop in Tilton for lunch (McDonald’s) – don’t forget extra money for lunch!

iii)EVERYONE must be at the camp together. PLEASE DONOT ARRIVE BEFORE 1:00PMor AFTER 2:00PM.

b)Saturday Return to Claremont (August 1)

i)Closing ceremony is at 8:45am/dismissal at 9:30am; feel free to join us.

c)During the camp week, no early departures unless it is a very special situation or arranged prior to camp; paperwork must be completed and turned in before leaving for camp.

8)Transportation to and from Camp

a)It is each person’s responsibility to get to camp. If you wish to carpool, please do so. The troop needs to arrive BETWEEN 1:00pmand 2:00pm(preferably all at the same time). Once in camp, there are several things to be accomplished and it would not be fair to hold the others up. These activities must be performed as a Troop. They include campsite orientation and safety, medical recheck and medication check by the camp nurse, swim check, dining hall orientation, orientation and camp tour, and pictures.

b)It is great to have parents go with their son to camp, visit and become familiar with where he will be staying.

c)Please do not wait until the last minute to work out your travel plans. Your cooperation will help assure a wonderful experience for all attendees (youth and adults alike).
