Entrance Antiphon

You are just, O Lord, and your judgement is right; treat your servant in accord with your merciful love.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 146
My soul, give praise to the Lord!
It is the Lord who perserves fidelity forever,
who does justice to those who are oppressed.
It is he who gives bread to the hungry,
the Lord who sets prisoners free.
It is the Lord who opens the eyes of the blind,
the Lord who raises up those who are bowed down.
It is the Lord who loves the just,
the Lord who protects the stranger.
The Lord upholds the orphan and the widow,
but thwarts the path of the wicked.
The Lord will reign forever,
the God of Sion from age to age.
My soul, give praise to the Lord! /

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia.

Jesus was preaching the Gospel of the kingdom, healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. Alleluia

Communion Antiphon

Like the deer that yearns for running streams, so my soul is yearning for you, my God; my soul is thirsting for God, the Living God.

Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible!

Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible helps you uncover the story woven through scripture with its clever narrative approach and ingenious color-coded Bible Timeline. It is a great way to get the “big picture” of the Bible and see how our Catholic Faith is rooted in scripture. You’ll see how the Bible reveals God’s loving plan for your life, and you will learn helpful ways to put your faith into practice.

SEPTEMBER – MONTH OF THE HOLY CROSS

During the month of September, the Church celebrates the Exultation or Triumph of the Holy Cross. To commemorate this month I would like to suggest the following:

1.  Be mindful and deliberate when making the Sign of the Cross - the Great sign of our Faith and the sign of God's Love for us.

2.  Have a crucifix displayed in your home - in a prominent place.

3.  Teach a child how to make the Sign of the Cross: from forehead to belly button, shoulder to shoulder - a nice big Sign of the Cross shows how much we love God.

4.  Begin each day with the Sign of the Cross and end each day with the Sign of the Cross.

5.  Take time to look at the Cross and give thanks for the greatest love of all made real by Jesus on the Cross.

6.  Ask Jesus to help you to imitate his self-sacrificing love as you take up your cross each day to follow him.

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B
06th September 2015 Brendan McConvery, C.Ss.R.
Commentary
First Reading (Is 35: 4-7)
The prophet addresses a dispirited people and assures them that God will come to their aid. The blind, the deaf, the lame and the dumb will be healed for their infirmity and the desert places will become a well-watered garden. Physical healing and natural abundance are not only good in themselves but signify the deeper experience of the presence of God in the midst of the people. This results in new spiritual sight, understanding, energy and witness in an environment blessed with the abundance of God’s creation.
Responsorial Psalm (Ps 145:7-10)
The Psalm also celebrates the healing power of God, evident in the provision of food for the hungry, freedom for the captive, sight for the blind, and protection for the widow, the orphan and the stranger.
Second Reading (Jam 2:1-5)
The Letter of James points out how God chose those who are poor in the eyes of the world and made them rich in faith and heirs to the promised kingdom. It is the duty of those acting in the name of God in the religious assembly to remember that fundamental fact and not use worldly standards to make distinctions between members of God’s worshipping people.
Gospel (Mk 7:31-37)
Jesus manifested the care and compassion of God throughout his ministry as he responded to the blind, the deaf, the dumb, the crippled and the leper. The New Testament writers see this aspect of Jesus’ ministry as a fulfilment of the prophecies of God’s compassionate, healing action in the book of Isaiah. Luke points out how Jesus interpreted his own ministry in the synagogue at Nazareth in terms of Isaiah’s prophecies, and Matthew and Luke point out how he explained his ministry to the messengers of the Baptist in similar terms.
In this reading Jesus is seen reacting to the plight of a deaf and dumb man in the Decapolis region. The Decapolis were ten ‘foreign‘ cities, made up of Greco- Roman and native peoples, and here Jesus is seen as fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah that all nations would learn about the God of the Jews and come to worship him.
