Heaven And Earth To Pass Away

Kenneth D. Sils

“The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it. And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one tittle of the law to fail.” Luke 16:16-17

That doctrine from Jesus in Luke 16 is quite difficult to discern, especially that expressiongiven in verse 17. What is Jesus communicating to the Israelites?

The mission of John the Baptist was to persuade Israel that their Messiah is now here and He is bringing an amazing kingdom spoken of in “the Law and the Prophets.” One of the causalities from the arrival of Jesus’ kingdom would be the authority God placed within: the Law and the Prophets. A New Testament would mark His kingdom and the nation of Israel must grabble with thisamazing spiritual tsunami change!

Jesus used very similar language inMatthew 5:17-20with the same declarative: not one small dot or a crossed “t” would lose its force until heaven and earth pass away. Let’s use a little backtracking logic. The Law and the Prophets (the Old Testament) is no longer in force as law (2 Corinthians 3:6-14, Hebrews 8:6-13, Colossians 2:11-17), therefore, we’re forced to conclude that “heaven and earth” must have passed away! All jotstittles (the OT law) is dismissed; so, heaven earth has passed away!

Heaven and earth” in this text wasn’t meant “literally”. Consider Isaiah’s prophecy in Isaiah 65:17-19. From Isaiah’s prophecy, a new “heaven and earth” would arrive some grand day from the old order and yield a re-created Jerusalem! A new “religious”universe would be established as Jesus assumes His kingship! Christians are new Jews among aNew Israel! Christians, let be thankful for the kingdom of Jesus!
